Anybody with an 8 spd tranny at or over 100K miles? What do you do for service?

I believe ram says lifetime oil... I’ve heard of a few people still changing the oil and filter on it as preventative maintenance. I plan on changing mine around 50,000to see what it looks like

Change it......

ZF specify 60000 miles for their transmission oil.

For my 2014 8-speed.....I have 110K on the truck now.

Maintenance schedule says change oil and filter for 6 SPEED only at 60K and 120K.

From the Owner's Manual:

Fluid Level Check – Eight-Speed Transmission
The fluid level is preset at the factory and does not
require adjustment under normal operating conditions.
Routine fluid level checks are not required, therefore the
transmission has no dipstick. Your authorized dealer can
check your transmission fluid level using special service
tools.
If you notice fluid leakage or transmission malfunction,
visit your authorized dealer immediately to have the
transmission fluid level checked. Operating the vehicle
with an improper fluid level can cause severe transmission
damage.

Fluid And Filter Changes – Eight-Speed
Transmission
Under normal operating conditions, the fluid installed at
the factory will provide satisfactory lubrication for the
life of the vehicle.
Routine fluid and filter changes are not required. However
change the fluid and filter if the fluid becomes
contaminated (with water, etc.), or if the transmission is
disassembled for any reason.

I will be getting mine done around the 75k mark myself.

Dont see it not needing it done, and what do they consider the life span of the transmission.

The reason I ask is it seems like it MUST be a dealership job...

How do you get the oil back in the tranny without a diptube?

I two some wth mine... not heavy towing, but I tow... seems like I want to be on top of this oil change lifetime or not.

I KNOW WHAT the sevice manual says... BUT I WANT to know what the right thing to do is.

The right thing to do is to service it. If it didn't get changed at 60K it's overdue.

Pretty sure there are threads on here about how to do it. Ram says lifetime the transmission manufacture says 60k. I trust the manufacturer of the transmission

I've owned a ton of different vehicles and transmissions and have never had a lubrication-related failure on engine, transmission, transfer case, axles..., even at higher mileage.

I trust the engineers and will not be changing out my ZF transmission fluid unless I encounter high water or unexpected maintenance requiring the transmission to be opened up.

Side note: I was reading about the ZFs on several BMW forums -- those guys can be real A-holes! "The ZF is great, but Dodge sucks and the programming has ruined them." "The ZF is wonderful in our applications, but in those sh!tty mopars it is garbage." And on and on...

Cool leased 320i, buddy.

Zf specify 60,000 mile oil life for their own oil in the 6 and 8 speeds.
For some reason ram, Chrysler, ford, vw etc. Specify 'lifetime' for the oil.
Your vehicle, your choice.
They are no different than any other auto box to service, just a bit choosy which oil they like.
I have a 6 speed with 920,000km on it and an 8 speed with 450,000 km , both trouble free.
Both have had oil and filters changed every 60,000km from new.
Me, I'll keep changing the oil every 60k.....

From the horses mouth.....

Is that for boxes they manufacture, or also for those manufactured under license and using different components?

My trans tech expert says that, for transmissions designed and built in Europe, you either change the fluids every 30-40,000 miles (before debris and gunk have time to build up) or only when something needs fixed. There does not seem to be much difference in transmission life, either way. But changing oil at 100,000 plus often leads to nothing but trouble and an early death.

If you use your truck as a truck, the mileage may vary.

Yeah why not do the service on transmission if you're planning to keep your truck for a while?

It's about risk and reward. Do you really want to save couple hundred bucks to change trans fluid and then risk your transmission breaking and having to spend thousands to fix it? It'll probably work more smoothly too so it'll be more pleasant to drive.

I did trans fluid change on my 8 speed at 60k. Wish I did the filter change too but I skipped it, and my mechanic said it's not necessary to change filter at 60k.

It's more than a couple hundred bucks to have the trans fluid changed by the dealership. I have heard 1400.00 being tossed around on various forums. About 250 to 300.00 to do it yourself.
