Ya, it's honestly a pain in the ass. Where I am were lucky to have some back roads pretty close by that work well for doing it. I feel bad for guys that are in the middle of a large city or in mountainous areas.
I have noticed though that more and more of the 2015s don't seem to have this issue.
Glad I'm getting a 2016 then. Hopefully even farther away from the problem. :D

Yeah,...that does sound like a pain in the ****. Glad I don't have to deal with that nonsense or the truck would be gone. LOL
I'm looking to possibly getting a 2016 Sport rc/sb 4X4 myself, so hopefully that issue is gone.
Thanks for the great explanation of things! :favorites13:

So a lot of pages and didn't read through them all so I have this clunk when coming to a stop BUT it's only when I'm in 4WD? Any idea why that may be?

I also have this issue on my 2016 1500 4x4 v8 8speed Crew. Only happens when I am about to come to a complete stop. Truck jerks forward what feels like a few inches...feels like another car slightly bumps my rear bumper. Happens almost every time I am coming to a complete stop.

My 14 had the clunk when coming to a stop early on but I read about how the transmission "learns" as you drive. I started driving a little more aggressively (taking off faster from stops, coming into a stop sign faster and laying on the brakes a little harder to come to a faster stop, etc) and it went away shortly after I started doing that. Not sure if the aggressive driving made the difference but I now have over 11k miles and the issue hasn't come back.

I have this too. My past 2 trucks GMC's had it and it was from the drive shaft slip yoke. The way it was explained to me was this; When you come to a stop the drive line is under load, once you have sat for a few seconds the load releases on the slip yoke and that is the clunk and feel you notice. On the GM's there is a TSB for this and all they do is pull the yoke, lubricate it and it is fixed....for a short period of time than returns. No damage occurs to the drive line from this but it is definitely annoying. When you come to a stop (usually a quick stop) release the brake for a second to take the pressure off the drive line and you will never feel the clunk again. Hope this helps.

Forgot to mention it happens mainly when the truck has down shifted to help slow down the truck to a stop when driving spiritedly.

it happens even when coasting to a stop. it's also a much different sound and feeling then the drive shaft. kinda feels like popping the clutch too fast on a manual

I'm bringing in my 2014 to a new dealership to have them look at this in 2 weeks. I previously had the relearning done about 6 months ago and it did not help. I towed my boat for the first time last weekend and it literally slammed from 2nd to 1st when coming to a stop a few times. I thought the boat was coming through the rear of the vehicle. I almost have 10K on it now.

Other than arguing for the tranny to be replaced has anybody had this fixed? What should I be trying to convince my dealer to do?

Update-the dealer did the relearning again on the transmission, and they also did some sort of a software relearning update on the throttle control. Remarkably, things seem much better. Still not perfect, but I can come to a smooth stop most of the time, and if I'm not paying too much attention I really don't notice the harsh 2-1 downshift anymore.

To be honest, I have a feeling it was the throttle control update that made the most difference. The dealer said this was recommended by Chrysler when they heard my complaints.

You guys should look into this.

Does anyone else have a problem with a thud/clunk when you are driving around? Mine only does it when it needs to downshift a gear to maintain speed, most notably when cruise is set and i come up to a hill, or when I give it some gas to make a downshift. It also does it when I pull up to a stop sign and don't fully stop, I give it gas to accelerate and it'll clunk. Note, this feels to be in the transmission or even the drive shaft

my 14 ecodiesel and 15 hemi both have done the clunking when coming to a stop either really slowly or really fast, only when it downshifts back into first. But it doesn't do it very often, and it seems to be kind of random. It hasn't been anything to worry about, it still shifts like a champ while actually driving so no worries for now. Ive noticed the ford transmissions do it at times too when ive driven a few f150s. Don't know...

Never had a problem just driving around though, or on any other shifts except that first gear shift. It seems as if it almost gets caught in 3rd, cant find second, and then slams into first.

2016... still worrying about automatic transmissions lol. When will they FINALLY master these things...

I've noticed a slight bump sometimes when coming to a stop, as if someone love tapped the rear bumper. There seems to be more of an issue with the V6. I've read that it bumps enough to make pulling into the garage interesting. When it bumps it has a tendency to push you through the back wall.

Yes, it surges when you try to come to a stop, impossible to stop smoothly, it keeps pushing you. This seems to have been mitigated by the throttle control software update the dealer did on my 2014.

just bought a new 2016 5.7 8 speed. noticed right away the 2 to 1 downshift surge when coming to a stop. when slowly coming to a stop the truck wants to surge forward requiring more brake pedal effort to stop. its been getting better and better and its pretty much a non-issue now, and I'm barely at 200 miles.

interestingly enough, I had inadvertently been doing the learn procedure as per TSB 21-012-14. my slow steady driving on smooth flat Florida roads has caused a fairly quick learn procedure. I can definitely feel the transmission learning and adapting. those who discredit the fact that a transmission has to learn and adapt are simply not educated on new transmission technology. in my opinion this 8 speed is absolutely brilliant ... so far :)

overall very happy with my purchase. hoping for many trouble-free miles.

cheers

Seems like this topic has two different types of things going on well guys listen up my 2015 crew can 5.7 8 speed developed the clunk when you apply the brakes and stop then as you let off CLUNK well i figured it out and fixed it today, now all my stops are smooth as butter. These trucks have a two piece drive shaft on the rear section if you get down and look you will see a rubber accordion looking boot with two metal bands securing it this covers where the drive shaft is two pieces the rear one that slips inside the front one these two parts are fluted and slide together on the splines well i had a chevy Z71 that had a similar set up that did the same thing so it dawned on me this is exactly the same thing so today we pulled the back section of the shaft and removed the boot sure enough same concept as the chevy both pieces were supposed to be greased up good so when ypu stop the piece slides in smoothly and when you let off brake it slides back smoothly, what i found was dry spots and even some light rust ( only 10k on truck) also you could see where the the shaft was dry amd trying to slide it had made ruff marks on the wide splines, so we took some emory cloth sand paper and smoothed all the roughness ofd and greased the heck out of all the splines with Green Grease this stuff is slick as owl **** water proof and stays where you put it. Put shaft back together be sure to mark the two pieces so you get it back like it came apart then torque flange bolts to 85 lb and use 242 lock tight. I guarantee you this will fix that damn clunk! I hope the fix lasts a long time the chevy did. But if you had to redo it in 20-30k its not that hard to do took about a hour and a half but now that i now exactly what to do i could do it in a hour. Hope this helps some of you,

I get it too when coming to a stop, not on take off. It does it maybe once a day. If it gets worse I'll bring it in.

Im sure a dealer would fix it if you push them and now at least you know what to tell them it is but when i talked to them about the clunk they told me point blank oh thats just inherot to that model. ********! Besides i lnow my work os better than what they would have done.
