I’m looking at ordering a 2020 Ram and trying to decide between the standard 3:26 axle and the 3:92. What would be the mpg difference. Leaning towards the 3:92. Also, do y’all like the 12” screen better than the 8.4”? Thanks

I have the 3.92 and I think you will see a 1 to 2 mpg drop vs. the 3.23 from my experience. I went with the 8.4 inch screen because I did not want all the function in one place in case of any troubles with the large screen.

3.92 for sure. You shouldn't notice much mileage difference.

Convert, for now.

MPG probably wont vary too much, but I'm still impressed with 3.21's and 35's on my 2019 Classic, still plenty of power.
I like the 12" screen, not sure I could live with it. The 8.4 is fantastic.

Opt for the 3.92 just in case you decide to tow a trailer/board in the future. Also make sure it has the electronic brake control.

3.92 gears. Mileage difference is minuscule. Towing capacity is increased by +/- 2,000lbs depending on 4x4 or 4x2 engine and suspension options. Add the trailer brake controller. You may not need it but it pays back at trade in time.

12" screen is awesome. I specifically waited for the new 19 to get it. 3.92 and I can get 18 easy.

I don't know where everyone is getting mpg difference is minuscule with 3.92's ???

At 70+ mph it is about a 3-4 mpg loss vs. the 3.21's with a 4X4 crew cab at least.
My 2016 Outdoorsman with 3.92's got 17 mpg @ 70+ mph stock.

Under 60 mph, the difference is small between the 2 gears.

If planning on towing over 8000 then the 3.92's are a must.

Here is my experience. I am on my second Ram 1500. First one was a 17 1500 crew Laramie 6'4" with the 5.7 and 3.21. Now, I use this vehicle as my daily driver, and I farm, so I tow with it. Reason I went with the 3.21 over the 3.92 was simple, better mileage. I pull a 20' gooseneck stock trailer loaded with cows a few times a year, and it tows it great. The only difference is that when pulling it at 70 mph and above, it will not go past 7th gear, which isn't a big deal. The 3.92 would likely go into 8th, but you will still be getting better mileage with the 3.21. I had great luck with the 3.21, so I purchased the same combo. I now have a 2020, 5.7 etorque with the 3.21. This one tows even better than my 17.

So, unless you are towing the maximum weight often, there is really no need to get the 3.92.

If you drive a lot of highway miles, the better mpg of the 3.21 outweighs the increased tow capacity of the 3.92.
If you tow 100% of the time or your tows are near the max, then the 3.92's make more sense.

I tow my boat 3-4 times per year, so better mpg for 99% of my driving time is the option I chose.

I’ve owned various rams and the mileage for the same motor and gears varies often. My current is a 2019 limited loaded less 4x4 and sunroof. I have the 5.7 with 392 gears and get 21 at highway speed of 70/73. Around town I get 17. As with any combination these motors/gears vary. I expected 17 hwy and 14 city, so I’m extremely happy. Of note is the fact that I filled the tank prior to test drive, put 50 miles on the test drive and refilled, dang thing got 22 mpg on the interstate. So the real world test cost me less than 10 bucks and I got the truck I was looking for with the bonus of good mileage.. so drive a few, spend a little and get what you want. Bonus is the 12’’ screen-it’s awesome, only problem is the OTA update, sometimes it doesn’t work and requires trip to dealer of refresh. Acceleration is the most important by product of the 392’s.
