Here yo go...

Headers

I would skip the shorties and go straight to longtubes. The gains from shorties are minimal on these motors where longtubes are getting anywhere from 20-30hp/tq to the wheels depending on whether you go with or without cats.

Long tubes all the way... I have ARH and then ceramic coated them for heat. Very happy.:) contact Matt at Moes for headers.

I don't see Kooks listed, they cost $$$$$$ but that is for a reason.

Kooks makes very nice headers, but they are relatively new for the Rams. I only know of 2 trucks running them, and I dont believe they have an 8sp specific kit yet.

I am very interested in this thread and more comments. I am not even through my first month of owning a Ram 1500 but I am researching like crazy about mods.

Seems long tubes all the way...I was planning on the Stainless MBRP cat back exhaust. How does everything bolt up? Say if I did the exhaust first then added some long tube headers later...

And what is life expectancy from non ceramic coated to ceramic coated? I live in Eugene OR where we almost never salt roads and the climate is generally fair to vehicles here as opposed to other climates.

I did the same as you stated above.started out with Magna 16869... Then installed ARH ceramic coated. Lastly I did a QTP Ecutout. Have best of both worlds now. Loud with flip of switch and nice rumble without annoying drone when closed.

Here's a question: how much difference is there between 1 3/4" and 1 7/8" primaries? Is bigger better or do you need bv heads and forced induction to get anything out of the bigger ones?

Plenty have proven there's virtually no difference between 1-3/4 and 1-7/8 primaries on an stock head/cam truck.

How hard is the actually install of a set of Longtubes, is it a DIY project at home if you're pretty mechanically inclined?

Oh yea. It's suuuuper easy on these trucks.

Put the front on jackstands. Take off the wheels and the fender liners. Boom, header is right in front of you.

So you've got headers coming to a Y-pipe? Then to the cut out and back to dual after the muffler? I'm thinking about picking up some headers down the road and I've already got a race lands cut out and I'm wondering what the gains differents would be with the y pipe vs x pipe

Yes the ARH come with a whole new y pipe that connects to a approx 2 foot section of straight oem pipe...the only piece of oem exhaust left after headers and cat back are installed. This is where I welded in the QTP Ecutout. I also made up a 10" dump pipe so I could weld in 2 spots to secure solidly. Now I can run open headers in open or through the 22" Magna flow muffler out the dual rear pipes. Truck sounds mean with headers and 16869 kit and obnoxious with the Ecutout open. I recommend ceramic coating them...my local shop charged $300 and coated headers and y pipe inside and out... They plugged or blocked off the high flow cats but everything else coated for high heat. This is the way to go...Expensive but the best!

Is it possible to install headers and not have to do any cutting or welding with with stock exhaust. Been thinking about headers for a while but I want the option to put the truck back to stock if I need to. I've been primarily looking at the JBA longtubes.

Its not heads and cam that make the difference, its the gearing and converter. 1 7/8" headers on a truck with 3.55's and a stock converter is a dog down low.

Anyone that doesnt intend to step up the gears and tq converter in their truck would benefit more from a 1 3/4" header.

id have to say, having 3.55(god i cant wait to do the swap) and 1 7/8 long tubes, i do notice a lag down low..i also have 37s too but i even felt it with 35s

my butt dyno couldnt tell you i lost power down low from stock manifolds, just that there is a a slight lag when taking off.
Unless you are going down the strip though its meaningless and barely noticeable

This may be true for the 6 speed trans but not the 8 speed.

Its not as noticeable on an 8sp at the dragstrip, but it is noticeable on the street when daily driving. Unless someone was serious about taking their truck to the dragstrip, I would not want 1 7/8" headers on an 8sp with 3.21 gears.
