I suppose raspy wasn't the correct word. It just has a lot more sound in the midrange than I like. It sounds awesome just quite a bit louder than I was expecting from all the sound clips I listened to. I must be getting old. Thanks for your input.
It is probably your MDS kicking in (Cylinder deactivation) turn that off and see if the sound you don't like goes away.
To turn it off just push the gear selector button on the steering wheel down, then put up all the way to 8.
I have been doing that the last few days, sounds much more consistent and I haven't noticed a drop in mpg.

I installed a Competitor Series about 2 months ago and love that badass sound. For only around $300 and the ability to directly bolt it on yourself, I don't know why anyone would get anything other than this if you're looking for a straight pipe in this price range. One thing I do not like is when that MDS kicks on, so I just always drive with it in the Standard mode like other people have said.

I just finished installing my Carven competitor series and only took about an hour. And the sound is awesome.

I don't want to jack R.L.K's thread, but I just wanted to respond to this.
I turned MDS off earlier ( had set the gear selector to 6 previously) and ran some errands. The exhaust note is more consistent and has a nice mellow tone except for the mid-range if you give it a bit of throttle. I'm still not sure if I'll sell it and get a mufflex kit (I've had magnaflow in the past and liked the sound) or maybe add a resonator before the muffler, but I just might be opening up a can of worms by doing that.

I went back to MF and couldn't be happier bud. I even got their new kit which comes hot coated black from the muffler back. LOVE the look and the sound. Although its pricey.

I had the Mufflex 14" on my 2014 Sport and now I have the Carven Competitor Series on my 2016 Rebel. The Mufflex was definitely more tame and the drone was less. But, I knew all of that before I bought the Carven. I think both of them sound great. I honestly like them both about the same. The Carven has to be very close to just being straight pipes imo. When I'm parked and goose it, it sounds like an f'ing race car....seriously.

Carven Exhaust or Craven Exhaust?

I installed the competitor last week, definitely louder in cab than anticipated per videos. Sweet spot is 55-60 on highway. Everything up to 40 is almost WOT.

LOL , You keep spelling out Craven ....?
Pretty sure it's Carven Exhaust

I don't know why I keep doing it. I wrote to them today asking them to change it to "Craven" so I wouldn't keep spelling it wrong. I'm waiting for thier reply. :)

Please give an update after a week or so. Love the sound of it. I had a flowmaster on my 3rd gen but got sick of it after few years. I would love this sound on the outside but keep as stock as possible on the inside. Thanks for. The vid

Yeah, there are a couple spots where the drone is a little much, but other than that, its' awesome. When I have my radio turned up, I don't hear the drone at all! lol

This is what I was going for too. Took my Carven off after couple months, drone was too much inside the cab.

Very Odd , I get pretty much Zero drone with mine , and I intentionally put mine in the "crazy " drone zone trying to hear it most of the times I just can't hear any at all
I have the competitor series Carven .

I'm thinking different 5.7s just sound different?
