I don’t know if I’m crazy, but I think I read something on one of these threads that the mounting spots for the actuator are already on all the trims and you just have to find the actuator and install it.

Hmmm.... I’ll have to look into that. I didn’t see it on my tailgate but I didn’t look to closely.

If the tabs are on the tailgate then I can help you with the math to get the correct length shock

Check this video out, looks hidden. I’m pretty sure mine has it from the factory, cause my tailgate is light as a feather and it’s a tradesman.

Great video but I wonder if this is 1500 specific or not. I’ll have to take out the drivers rear tail light housing tomorrow and see if I have the mounting points.

Edit... I read the 2500/3500’s have the mounts behind the rear passenger tail light housing. We shall see tomorrow.

All you need is the shock/damper strut. Part number 68362518AA

Did your tailgate not come with something similar already installed? My 2020 2500 has something called tailgate dampening system (or something like that) that makes opening and closing the tailgate very simple, one handed.

The tailgate already opens easily and it's the lightest tailgate I've ever owned.

@Papa Red mine did not come with the tailgate dampening system. I must have left it off the order thinking it came standard as the tailgate was so light.

@Jimmy07 thanks for the part number.

I appreciate all the help with locating this part. I'll be picking this up today.

Oddly enough, item 15 is where the damper goes, but it points to nowhere on this diagram.

Judging from the location, this is on the passenger side, probably behind the tail light housing.

I took the passenger tail light off and found provisions for the tailgate damper assembly.

My only questions is what size munchkin hands do I need to borrow to get down in there...

My huge mits aren't gonna fit in that hole. I may have to enlist the help of my wife to help install this.

Thanks everyone for the help and suggestions!

Get on it so I can order and get this done!

My tradesman does have a light tailgate but I don't want it slamming down all the time. I think this is a very functional accessory

I ordered the part through the local Ram dealer's parts order site for $28.91 and will pick it up tomorrow.

You don't need to get your hand in there do you? Hold the rod by the upper end, stiff enough to just push the end on the bottom peg, then move the door to align the top ball socket of the rod to pin. Thats what the guy on the video I watched did. Only struggle he had at the start was to get the top on. He was trying to collapse the rod to get the top on until he realized moving the tailgate after bottom was on lined the the top up.

I picked up the damper thus afternoon and got it installed. It’s a five minute job.

I highly recommend this to anyone as it’s a night and day difference!

You don't have to..but it sure is a nice feature! To me its not an issue of heavy or light. Its nice cause you don't have to think about holding the tailgate as it goes down while concentrating on something in your other hand. Kinda like having a powered lift tailgate on a van or suv.
