I've had mine since August. Without thinking i used 87 on the first couple of tanks and it clearly didn't like it. It runs 89 smoothly and seems happy. That said I do not notice any improvement in gas mileage. I'm still low miles though so we will see. But the MDS hated the 87.

I think they say 89 octane is recommended but 87 is acceptable. 89 is just mid-grade or "plus" as many stations call it. I've always run 87 and it seems fine but I guess I wouldn't know the difference :)

Honestly, I've never really thought about it other than reading in the manual that 87 is acceptable. I think I'll try a few tanks of mid grade and see if I notice a difference.

I've always run 87 in it, I don't think the compression is high enough to worry about it. If anything, the ECU's these days will pull timing as they see fit anyway.

I have never ran anything but 87 in my 2014 6.4.
In fact that's what it says to run in the manuel. It states there would be NO benefit in running anything but 87.

Exactly what my manual says. I've always run 87 in mine and haven't tried mid-grade or premium in mine. If I were to add a tuner I'd try a higher octane fuel and see how it does.

I run premium when towing because I want every last ounce of power. Empty it's mostly 87 with an occasional 91 for giggles.

If you aren't getting any spark knock or "pinging" on the 87 then you don't have to waste your money on anything else. If it does "ping" then move up to 89 and see if it still happens.

I've run 87 and 89 in mine. The engine seems quieter on 89. Other than that no noticeable differences. On the 14's it said 87 was recommended. They changed it for the 15's where 89 is recommended but 87 is ok

Local area here has 85 as regular, 88 mid, 91 premium. 91 here at all the gas stations has NO Ethanol in it, just straight gas, but you pay for it...$3.10 a gallon, 75 cents more than 88, 40 cents more than diesel. I've been wanting to try some 85 up here at 7200', but thought I remember reading from another forum member that their oil changes were more frequent using the stuff. Think I'd just be blowing my money if I tried the 91. Since our area attracts and has a high snowmobile crowd its nice to have this available as the high performance two & four strokes just don't like ethanol mix.

I don't have an HD truck, but I live in a similar area at around 5000 feet before I head into the mountains. I usually use 85, tried 88 for a while then went back to 85, just can't beat 1.85/gal at Costco. Didn't notice much difference and the oil life meter doesn't really seem to be accelerating any. This is all on the 5.7 though.

Steady diet of 87 for mine. She drinks like on old wino, so she'll have to live on ripple...

This ^^^^ for me as well.

Pretty sure earlier this year something was released from Dodge suggesting 89 was now recommended.

Here's a cut n paste from the 2015 owners manual

This engine is designed to meet all emis- sions regulations and provide satisfactory fuel economy and performance when us- ing high quality unleaded gasoline having an octane range of 87 to 89. The manufac- turer recommends the use of 89 octane for optimum
performance. The use of premium gasoline (Over 89 octane) is not recommended, as it will not provide any benefit over regular gasoline in these engines. Light spark knock at low engine speeds is not harmful to your engine. However, continued heavy spark knock at high speeds can cause damage and immediate service is required. Poor quality gasoline can cause problems such as hard starting, stalling, and hesitations. If you experi- ence these symptoms, try another brand of gasoline before considering service for the vehicle. Over40automanufacturer’sworldwidehaveissuedand endorsed consistent gasoline specifications (the World- wide Fuel Charter, WWFC) which define fuel properties necessary to deliver enhanced emissions, performance, anddurabilityforyourvehicle.Themanufacturerrecom- mends the use of gasolines that meet the WWFC speci- fications, if they are available

Interesting..... in an effort to NOT move my lazy, Christmas shopping burned butt out of my recliner, I'm not going for my manual (2014 2500 6.4 Hemi). But, it sound like there was a change in terminology between 14 & 15 in the manual?

2014 says 87 is fine
2015 says 89 is recommended

Seems like a slight change in terms with the newer trucks having a bit more firm recommendation on the 89. Am I safe to assume there is no difference in the engines or programming or anything else that would change fuel requirement?

Running premium won't help and will likely hurt a bit. unless you are tuned properly for the increased octane, you are wasting money.

think the add for the truck said premium [which I guess you can take as 89 or 91 depending on station] the sales guy I spoke to [hadn't dealt with this dealer before] said I would need to run super which I take as 91 and premium as 89 . not really sure why it even got brought up unless it was because I have a 1500 now but it did get me to wondering . I know when I had my 03 GMC 2500 with the 6.0 I always ran just reg. 87 in it .
