My engine (1985 318) has started knocking. It had a barely discernable knock several months ago that would go away after it warmed up. I haven't driven it in about a month because I've been working on other things on it and when I cranked it, there's this much louder knock.
It's definitely on the driver's side and it sounds like it's on the topside (not piston rod). From my research, these engines have hydraulic lifters and no rocker arm adjustment. Based on what it sounds like I think it's some kind of valve issue (out of spec rocker is my best guess or bad lifter).
Am I on the right track? Below are two short videos of the problem.
