I’ve have went back and forth with gas trucks and diesel trucks. I always seem disappointed in the gas each time

Lots of great opinions here, and now here is mine . I bought a USED low mileage Diesel Laramie Longhorn and got it CPO with the warranty. I paid about $13,000 less than I could have bought new (I know because I tried for 3 months). It has 3:73 gears and pulls like a train, no effort at all, and I get 18.5 mpg unload combined driving. Great vehicle, I absolutely love it. Good luck with your search/decision

I'm assuming someone special ordered those gears? Stock with the Cummins is 3.42; I've never seen one with a 3.73 gearset, but anything's possible.

It appears he has a DRW according to his signature. Those came with 3.42, 3.73, or 4.10 gears.

I’m towing a 41’vengence toyhauler, with 16-2500 Diesel. It seems to always be struggling even on small up grades. We decided to upgrade to a 3500, but found cost where out of our affordable range. So, we took truck the get it weighed. What I learned is we’re running at close to max capacity. Truck and trailer, no bikes but full tanks, we are right at 23,000 combined weight. Having to do it all over I would by that 3500 and not have to worry about overloading. It’s nice getting 21-23 mpg without a load, but crawling over mountains gets aggravating.

Mine came factory with 3.42. Which is why it struggles getting over hills. I’d like the change out gears to 4:10 which I think are stock in 19 models. Can I get gears only changed or do I need new differential?

Just a simple regear is all that's needed. Your running stock size tires?

I am looking at getting out of a half ton and into a 3/4 ton. I want to get a toy hauler trailer and I have a 4 seater RZR. for what im looking at i will be pulling about 8-11k depending what I end up going with total. I know the diesel is going to pull a little better but I am worried about all the problems there can be. I also would like to by used and let someone else take the hit of a new vehicle. If i was buying new i would just go with the diesel and have a warranty. I have been reading on the 6.4 Hemi there is lifter problems? Is it on certain years or they all can have this? Just looking for some opinions right now.

..... a four seater razor can get up to 2000 pounds ..... I pull a toy hauler fifth wheel and love it but I’m pulling 23,000 pounds fully loaded. If you want to bumper pull and toy hauler, remember weight.... I would recommend a diesel just for that .... depends on where you live .... flat land area no problem for gas... I live in Colorado so I need a diesel for the passes around here. Not saying there is nothing wrong with a gas engine but I would get a diesel just so the weight doesn’t play a factor .....

Have had both types of 2500HD’s. 2007 6.7 first generation blue tech, had issues with turbo, they replaced mine 3 times. Then the EGR system fixed that 4 times, then the EGR filter 2 times all within 150k miles. Great truck and power but it was the first try with the new “greener” Cummins. Today they have the bugs worked out but tag on an 8500.00 option price over the 6.4 Hemi. I have one and can’t notice my 12k lb trailer behind me until I hit pretty decent hills. Engine break is phenomenal on the Cummins equipped engines. I went 85k miles before the first brake job. Cost vs ROI. If you are paying for it and won’t be making money off it, get the Gaser. Unless you have a LOT of extra cash to throw away....

Go with the Cummins. Towing 11000 lb with a Gasser is not fun. We just bought a 2019 Ram 3500 with the 6.7 Cummins. The price between the 2500 and 3500 was the same.

Well, I bought the Cummins because it came with a manual tranny. Don't do a lot of towing but this thing is fantastic. Getting 20 mpg most of the time and with fuel here at 2.90/gal it actually is cheaper to run than my Tacoma was.

Good choice! To maintain the maintenance of the Cummins, let YouTube be your best friend and save some $$$$.

My 6.4 does what I need it to do but lately I keep catching myself looking at Cummins equipped trucks. I think a regear would help but since I did 35s and a level my truck always seems to be straining. I carry about 800 pounds worth of tools everyday and have a topper so that doesnt help neithe .

I have a lifted 18 CTD 3500 with the 3.42 gears—running 35’s and I didn’t even notice a difference over the stock 33’s.

Taking the average fuel mileage of the 6.4L and Cummins on Fuelly.com, diesel would have to be at 80-90 cents more to have the same cost per mile. Anything less than that, the diesel has a lower cost per mile.

I have heard that BUT my 2012 CTD only got 12 around here and 15 on the highway. My 6.4 does better than that AND gas is cheaper to so in my case I didn't find that to be true. I also had a lot of concerns with possible expensive problems and I always had an oil change light kick on around 5000 miles so maintenance was more costly also.
