Just bought a 04 ram 5.7 that has some issues, fixed most things but got this tapping sound that doesn't speed up with rpm but is accompanied by a miss at the exact same time. I've tuned it up, and cleaned the throttle body and pcv...still there...gonna try and upload a video

Run it without belt see if it goes away if not you need to pull the valve covers have a look could be a broken/breaking valve spring 3rd gens where notorious for that but could be alot of things dont drive it/run it alot until you find the issue.

But wouldn't something like that speed up with rpm?

Yes.

Does it do it while sitting still? If so it has to be engine/tranny and not suspension/driveline. Although that would be odd that it doesn't speed up with RPM.

Does it eventually stop after it is heated up? Could be heat growth causing the noise but once up to temp should stop.

No, I drove it an hour and a half home. And it did it the entire time. It's one of a few issues it's got...no power, running way rich, etc. But under a load it also backfires out the exhaust...

Does it make the noise with the switch in RUN but engine not running?
It sounds like an actuator that is malfunctioning.

Drove it an hour and a half home. Done it the entire time. It's steady regardless of rpm. Truck is really down on power as well and a strong smell of gas while driving. Gonna pull valve covers this weekend. Just never run into an issue like this.

No it doesn't, it actually sounds like it's coming from the throttle body or inside the intake. According to my stethoscope...

There is a possibility, that the noise is coming from the HVAC system
it sounds like an actuator that is continually opening & closing a door.
although i have never heard one that is that loud

Try removing the fuse,
if there is no fuse for the HVAC fan & HVAC control panel
You might look at the front passenger side right foot kick panel.
I believe that panel conceals an electrical connector, that can be unplugged

Good Luck

Figured it out hopefully. Collapsed lifter, exhaust valve. Pulled heads today.
