after reading a lot about lifts/spacers and the balljoint issue on newer rams i had a question.

if you get a lift that includes lift knuckles not just spacers and shocks do you still need aftermarket upper control arms or do the knuckles correct the ball joint angle that was thrown off by the spacers?

You are correct. All proper lift kits (anything taller than a leveling kit) will come with new steering knuckles that are longer to correct the steering geometry. The upper A-arms/ball joints shouldn't be an issue at all.
