Thay things pretty loud.

I imagine its not a broken manifold bolt. ?

Bro I have no idea what that is. I think your mechanic was on to something.

How often does it do that? Was the engine ticking besides that noise? Did you check the oil level?

This just started when I posted a few nights ago. It has never made valvetrain noise before, other than normal noise. It has never rattled or given any random trouble. Its never been below the add line on oil, the ex manifold bolts were replaced Dec '16 and are holding up and there are no exhaust leaks, it runs like my old road runner when a plug fouled.. shakes and has no power.

When I started it a couple of hours ago it hesitated like the timing was advanced too far.. the starter bogged like one cylinder was hydro locked and then got past it and fired right up. Power is down and sluggish and does not want to downshift to increase rpm's on slight grades.

Other than all the effing problems I've had its been a great truck.

Even in tow haul you are having a problem downshifting? Maybe your daughter was right and the truck lunged forward in park? You may have to take that to the dealer. Someone suggested TC in the thread, maybe they were right?

Its a lifter, cross arm broke and beat the **** out of the cam. $5300 at the steelership to replace the cam shaft and parts, $9400 to put a new engine in. Feeling a little screwed right now...

So, not putting two and two together, all the posts and comments I've read in the race section on moparts.com and it didn't occur to me that the failure was this. ****.

I'm sorry as **** this happened to you, but it is a weakness in the Hemi's. I wish I could have helped, that we could have tried high moly earlier. So this truck was new to you and always knocked/ticked? How many miles did you put on it?

There is nothing we can do to help you, but the info you give may help the next guy. Actually as bad as 5300 sounds, the other guys on the board that have had the same work done at the dealership have paid near 8 grand. And if you found a local shop very likely the price will be better as well. What oil were you using since you got the truck if you don't mind say'n?

Looks like it's time to get a custom cam. May as well make the best of it

I'm sorry to hear about this. I would definitely get a second opinion by an independent shop. $5300 for a cam and lifter swap is insane...

With 100k miles on the truck, I would opt for a new engine. It would be a waste to shell out 5300 and not even know the condition of the pistons. I bet at somewhere other then dealer, you can get a Jasper Hemi swap with warranty near for 6500 to 7000 installed with warranty. Then take good care of it, that truck will be a survivor.

This is just my guess but I don't think whatever he's used has had much to do with it, it's probably more to do with how it was treated the first 96000 miles of its life.

I have a 2004 5.7 171K with a tick noise also. It has been doing it since I bought it 5 years ago. Continued to do it even after I replaced my lifters. I have been told it was normal also. I use synthetic oil. Have replaced bolts and gaskets on exhaust manifold. Curious on what everyone thinks. Have video of sound.

fixes for hemi tick

Do a forum search, ton of stuff there. That sounds like lifter tick to me. It isn't about synthetic oil, it is about the additives in certain oils that can help. Read moly basics.
