2011 Ram 5.7. Was driving down the expressway at 75 mph when I started to feel a vibration in the steering wheel. As I slowed down to pull off the road the movement in the steering wheel became slower with the deceleration of the truck but much worse in that it was jerking the wheel about 2" as I came to a stop. I limped to the next exit, checked the tires for any movement or a flat, nothing. Chalked it up to possibly having a chunk of ice stuck in the wheel. After another 50 miles at highway speeds with no issue, it started again. I pulled off again under some light and cranked the wheels so I could see the suspension. Immediately noticed that my driver side sway bar was broken. In my mind, Bingo. Talked to a friend that said I should still be able to drive it home. Turned around and drove 100 miles home with no issue. Also had no issues for several days thereafter while waiting to get it in for repair.

Got the sway bar and links replaced and had them check the rest of the suspension parts. No issues. Picked it up and drove it for three days with no problems. 4th day after about ten miles on the road, started again. Pulled over, took off again and it worked itself out again after a couple miles but then returned about five miles later. Took it back in to the shop but of course they haven't been able to duplicate it and can't find any problems with the suspension. I had tires replaced about three months ago but haven't any issues up to this point.

Any input would be appreciated.

I'd suspect ball joints and/or control arm bushings. Check the shocks also, especially if they're original OEM

There are 3 different sway bars for the front depending on model and 2wd/4wd.
Did they install the right one? Also check the bolts at the strut/lower arm point for looseness.

Is the truck lifted in any way? Make sure your Drag link and your tie rod arms are horizontal to each other. Sounds like you might be getting the DEATH WOBBLE.

Thanks. It's not lifted. Does sound similar to the death wobble but the shop claims they've checked all of the potential suspension culprits. It's odd that it's so random.

Is it possible on one or two of those occasions there might have been a build-up of snow/ice on the inner edge of the rim (out of site)?

I've had that in the winter before.

Appreciate all the input so far. Ball joints were replaced in October. Correct sway bar and links of the three was replaced. Had to provide VIN to ensure they git the correct one. I too initially thought ice build up but had a 3-day warm up prior to the most recent occurrence and the situation is not constant when it does happens.

Road force the tires. Even better have them balanced on the truck. Slipped belt or a tire heat issue may be the culprit.
