Just to keep this fun mystery going... (and I know I am a '13 Power Wagon, but still I thought some might find this interesting);

So, I just HAD to go look at my truck. No shock. No cross bar mount and no pre drilled holes in the top of the differential either. I also found no leaks, but that is a whole 'nuther story.

Now, I know I may be throwing a Apple in the Orange bucket here, as it is a Power Wagon, with the big AAM Rear End. But, all 2500 frames would roll off the same line, right? If ANYTHING is going to twist and hop, and justify the extra cost and attention to detail in terms of driveline components, the Power Wagon would be it, with the 4.56's, Lockers and all of that.

All the '14s have the big rear end, the diesels just got a bigger one (gas 2500s have 11.5 and diesel have 11.8)

Looks like mega cab, no extra shock (4.10 or 3.73, 6.4 or 5.7)
Crew cab short bed has shock (4x4, 5.7 or 6.4, tow or not, anti-spin or not, 3.73 or 4.10)
Regular cab long bed ?
Crew cab long bed ?
None spotted on diesel

The 11.8" only goes in the 3500's with the diesel, all 2500's keep the 11.5".

To get even more specific; the 11.8" rear is only used with 3500 DRW diesel HO/Aisin.

This rear shock thing is weird....

Just got off the phone with the Ram service/parts department.... useless! They have no idea. I was trying to track down a specific build code that would be the answer. I think I'm going to snoop around the lot and look under the new 2500's there and see if I can't find one and go from there.

Seems like the only difference between me not having it and Bigdaddy having it is that mine is a megacab and his a crew. Bigdaddy, what is your rear gear ratio?

aggie,

I wonder what would happen if you took it in to your dealer and showed the service advisor that you don't have it. Show him a truck on the lot that does. Ask him why you don't. I bet that he has to call RAM to get the explanation. OR he just shrugs his shoulders and assumes that it was not put on at the factory and just puts one on your truck.

Based on posts on two different forums it looks like there might be two common denominators. CTD and Mega.

CTD (with the smallish sample size only CCSB or Mega owners posted) NO SHOCK

5.7L / 6.4L CCSB YES SHOCK

5.7L / 6.4L MEGA NO SHOCK

That makes me think it's a weight thing. Anyone with a CCLB that can chime in?

Olli, was the mega 6.4 detuned for both the 25/3500? Im thinking that may be the reason the megas dont have the shock

I believe that only the 3500 Mega is de-tuned.

Detuned? as in... from the 410 hp/429 lb.ft. that the 2500 6.4 is rated?

or as in from the ~470 hp that the srt8 6.4 engines are rated at?

The 3500 Mega is rated at 367HP or 370HP (depending on where you read). The torque is the same. De-tuned from the 2500 6.4L rating.

It has been said that the lower HP is due to taking that rating at a lower rpm to pass a noise limitation due to GVWR. That would be why the torque is the same as the 6.4L makes peak torque nice and low. It has also been said that the engine isn't really detuned and would make the same HP if reved to a higher rpm. I know of nothing factual, in writing, that would back this up.

They were stock on the regular cab SRT-10 back in 2004-2006 as well. It's to prevent the rear axle from banging around from a dig. We put them on the quad cabs as well.

Did they really assume the CTD will not be hammering the rear suspension from a "dig"? (rhetorical, no one here knows i'm sure)

Cause that thing has double the torque, and it would be just as rough or rougher on the rear end under those same circumstances.

I can't make sense of this. lol. No rhyme or reason, other than (best we can tell) 2500 GAS Crew Cab Short Bed. Which doesn't explain why.

Personally, I think that the CTD's are neutered due to torque management from a stand still and also from not being at full boost. Maybe they just wouldn't have any wheel hop as they can't send the power to the rear wheels as quick.

The CTD truck also weighs about 1000 lbs (from what I remember) more.

I think a 0-30 mph drag race between a 6.4L and a CTD would be interesting.

Absolutely true. This is an excerpt from an SRT article about the SRT-10.

"Providing extra support to prevent wheel hop, is an additional fifth shock located on the rear axle."
