Man you have never lie on this, I just came back from ocean and I was getting 17.3 mpg, I haven't did the hand calculation yet so tomorrow when I fill up.

I've only hit approx. 18 hand calculated once, early in the life of my truck. also, going and coming back from the ocean. Never seen anything close to that since. Maybe the 6.4 needs sea air for max efficiency.

I'm keeping an eye on this to see my average, so what grade gas are you using, the dealer said that I can use 87 Octane?

The only time I could see the need to run 89 in a 6.4L is if you were towing really heavy especially on a hot day.

I am running 89. I noticed when the truck was new I got better mpg's. I should se if there is a difference now that I have 22.5k on it.

I guess i should mention that the first tank "dealer fill up". was 87. As soon as i had 1 tank of 93 through it the MPG went up 1.5 ish.

It could have also been the truck breaking in too.

Ethanol free gas, 3mpg difference between 88 no ethanol vs 87 and 10% ethanol. Truck runs so much better on non-ethanol gas!

You say that now until everything is caked in carbon from using 100% gas.

It could have also been the truck breaking in too.

it also could have been the fuel ;)

to see an instant 1.5 jump in MPG in about 1/2 tank of 93... on the 2nd tank the truck ever had... It started out at 10.5mpg on the original tank (and stayed there) and it actually went up to 11.5 -12 shortly after a 93 fill up. then it stayed their for over the first 1500 miles.

To me it sounds like the majority of it is due to fuel.

EDIT: note that my Manuel recommends 89 min (87 acceptable) thats another sign.

Now try a tank of 87 or 89 and see if it changes. On a stock vehicle running 93 over 87 will get you worse mileage and power, the exception would be if it was pure gas, you would gain a little bit of mileage but still lose power.

then why does ram say to get the full estimated power out of the 6.4 you need to run higher than 87?

Ok, on a stock vehicle that recommends 89 the same thing applies, you lose power and mileage going above that. Your main point though has never been answered though. My 2014 manual says use 87, it says nothing about 89, they changed it for 2015 and never explained why.

I dont know what you want. I said MY Manuel says 89 is recommended. and my truck isn a 2014 like yours. its a 2016. I never said the Manuel says why it says that it just does. I never said anything about the Manuel recommending 93.in my original post all I said was i got better mileage with 93 vs 87.

an i never said I got more power using 93 vs 89.

I'm not sure what you are trying to say. I never said anything about your manual recommending 93. I'm more saying if you tried 87 or 89 now you would probably get the same mileage if not better than the 93 you are running. I tried running 93 on the stock tune and 89 stock and noticed no difference in anything aside from the slight drop in mileage.

My 2011 Ram 1500 with the 5.7L owner's manual recommended 89 octane. My 2015 Ram 3500 with the 6.4L owner's manual recommends 89 octane as well.
