Its a complimenting mod but your not going to get whiplash so if you can save $$ by doing a DIY vs up to a few hundred for aftermarket then its a good option to look into.

For the best performance gains, try to go with a tube that is 4-6" at the filter and down to 3.5" at the throttle body. This will take some fab work, but will show great gains.

There is a cold air intake that is made for our trucks that is exactly what you describe. Forgot the name of it though, its carbon fiber.

It is called a BFI ramhammer, and is what is pictured above. Only problem is that they are no longer made.

This design is as good as it gets. What happens is that as the air is going into your filter you are sucking in 6" of air. As that compresses to a smaller diameter, it will increase the velocity of the air and in turn make more power.

That is the main reason why our port design on our throttle bodies starts out bigger at the outside of the tb, and then closes up a little at the TB blade.

I dont know what happened to him personally, but he ended up taking alot of money from mutiple people and not delivering the intakes. It basically ruined his name and the company all together. JJ used to work with him, so I'm sure he knows much more about what happened than I do.

As for building these myself, I have not even looked into this. I would rather it be made of plastic than metal, but this might be something for me to take on in the future.

any ideas on how to build a custom intake like the one pictured above? maybe out of aluminum? 3.5 - 6 or 5.5 pipe? it would be pretty easy to taper a pipe from 3.5 to 6 and then just put a 6 inch elbow on the end of the pipe

Try to stick with plastic because it will dissipate the heat faster. And try to put the filter directly behind the passenger side headlight as this is where the coolest underhood temps will be.
