Because you were preparing for the cold weather or reacting to something with the cold weather? Can you spell out your history again, you are getting more complicated then that h395 guy. Oil and next to 1-10 satisfaction simply by sound as we already know the uoa was good 10w40. any unpleasantness with 10w40 ever?

Mine would look like this...

5w20 redline satisfaction-10
5w30 redline satisfaction-10
10w30 redline satisfaction-7

0w40 PUP, Amsoil & redline Satisfaction 5. General noisiness and random cold start clatter. Amsoil 0w40 showed good UOA

Mixture of redline 0W40 & 10w40 satisfaction 7. Noise level good, cold start clatter better but still random.

Redline 10w40 satisfaction 8. Noise level was good, possibly the best yet. No cold start clatter for 5 months. Last month before oil change it started happening randomly but not often. It would be a 9 out of 10 but 10w40 scares me a bit when i think about our few nights in the teens, single digits and even below zero.

Redline 5w40 satisfaction unknown, only about 300 miles on it but no cold start noise yet.

So you think it was getting nosier because the weather was changing? It is possible, and another possibility is the oil sheared and getting used up. I wonder is 10w40 has more vii's then 5w30, even though the hths is so impressive it could make a difference. 20w50 is under 20 visc at 100, something else to consider. Give it 1000 miles and don't even sweat it til then. Lets see what happens, I will bet you will be happy with the results.

We need fricken venn diagrams with everyone around here.

The majority of times that it has happened has been in cold weather.

I don't know why you are afraid of 10w40 in winter, it's operating temp minimum is well below this...

I think you may be hung up on weight instead of appreciating the winter rating, if I may be so bold to say so. Translate -30c = -22f. Disregard, I was writing this as you were replying it is cold related. If it's the cold, it's the cold, the answer will be complicated.

Are we talking about the 5w40, 10w40, or both or all of the oils.

Well not 5w40 as it just went in like two weeks ago and 300 miles ago and has not happened yet.

But excluding the unknown of my current fill it happens more in the cold regardless. And i hace not tried 10w40 in the winter yet. It was last summers 6month OCI.

You know redline lowered their moly, so there is easy room to gain if you find the right moly treat. You know going up 300ppm moly will be fine. I know I say there is no UP, but maybe I'm wrong, maybe actually adding biotech might be a play to consider.

What are you saying? I got cold start clatter on 10w40 in the last month the OCI. It happened like 50% of the time for a few weeks. That is what made me jump on the 5w40 bandwagon. Just to try it.

why are you talking about changing the filter with the current fill?

That was only something I mentioned I may try if the noise occurs on this interval with 5w40. I completely understand it probably has nothing to do with it. But spending nine dollars on the filter just to try something is no big deal for me.

Tell me about it, I' ready to strangle your ass.

5w40 redline > 10w40 redline in every way. Just like 5w30/10w30 they use a different base oil, it is the only way to explain the stat sheet. You have baggage from the historical perceptive, but the 5w40 redline train requires you to leave your baggage at home. Forget what you knew before, I'd put money that 5w40 reldine is your year round oil. I may be wrong, but that is what my experience and the stat sheet is telling me. I couldn't believe it either that 10w30 knocked in my truck, but 5w30 doesn't, but 5w30 kills 10w30 in the triangle, and just as a preach to others, I learned the hard way, trust the stat sheet. 5w40 redline is better at protecting metal then 10w40. Not by much, but it is, and it flows cold better. Get on the train and give it a chance. gl brother

Let's agree on this, if 5w40 redline is nice and quiet til spring it is your new oil, because there is no reason to go back to 0w40. I think you will be pleasantly surprised but if there is any knocking write down when it happens and things like how long the truck sat, outside temp, etc.
