Just fyi changing gear ratios does in fact change tow ratings across all truck models ! All you have to do is look it up ? Factory tow rating are drastically changed bye gear ratios and 3.22 to 3.92 is a huge difference .

I would make sure the dealer re-certified the truck for the new tow rating (put on a new door sticker, and worked bureaucratic magic). Otherwise a claim could be refused by insurance if it was technically overloaded.

No way I'd tow 7000 with a V6 no matter what the gears. You'll hate yourself for doing so come the first set of hills.

Thank you I agree and I have been on different forums and this always comes up. The sticker is law no mater what mods you do you can only legally tow that is it registered for. I know in Ontario the MTO ( ministry of transport Ontario) same as the DOT will be starting a campaign to check people towing travel trailers. To insure that they are following the regulations

Can you please show me an example of said sticker ? I've never seen a legally required sticker with a tow rating on it.

Some have GCWR on the sticker, some only have it in the owner's manual.

GM started putting these on as a courtesy 2 years ago but they aren't required. The challenge is still on: Show me a legally required sticker on a pickup truck that has a tow rating on it. The sticker in the door jamb only shows the GVWR.

I initially thought it was there and required, but apparently not. Thanks for the edumacation on that. The point still remains. The dealer should make sure to backup the change with some kind of paper-trail, maybe update the vin, issue a new manual, whatever.

Exactly. Many posters on the Interwebs use the term "legal tow rating" which isn't defined. Other jurisdictions like e.g. Germany are different: The maximum trailer weight with/without trailer brakes and the maximum tongue weight are listed in the registration of the vehicle so there is no ambiguity.

Currently weight checks look at axle/tire ratings because there is no other info easily available. Obviously it is still at the discretion of the officer to declare the driver unsafe and/or negligent if the trailer is much heavier and/or larger than the tow vehicle.

Here is the issue...no matter what the interwebs say if someone is in a serious accident while towing over the manufacturers tow rating an attorney will have a field day showing the jury all of the documentation stating the defendant was towing overweight. Now the defendant has to spend thousands of $$$ to hire an expert witness to argue that and there is a good chance you will lose anyway. To me it isn't worth all of that

You must not have towed with gas motors before the late 90s.

I had a K3500 at work that was 185hp, 285ftlbs tq. TH400 trans. Effective gear ratios and torque multiplication was dismal compared to a modern 8spd V6.

Yep. Not quite 80's but had a 1979 Sierra 1500 shortbed with a 350 and 3.73's. Towed my 18' car trailer with my 1969 Chevelle on it. Probably about 6000-6500lbs total weight. But the engine wasn't stock. I had towed with it stock but pulled it. Actually used a 327 block (same block as the 350) and had another 350 crank so had all the machine work done beforehand so swapped them out in a few hours. It was mostly stock except a very small Crane hydraulic cam (non-roller) and an Edelbrock Performer intake with a Performer carb. I had the original Q-jet on it at first and liked it better but a friend talked me into the Performer carb. Hard to beat those Q-jets when you have them set up right. I got about 2 MPG better with the Q-jet but I had went through it and had it set up perfectly.

I'm guessing this motor was only maybe 25-40 HP over stock (maybe 300-325, maybe 350 HP) and it towed the car and trailer with ease. Had a 2" lift also with 31x10.5 BF Goodrich's. I also had a 1985ish 2500 with a 350 but I only towed a 30' aluminum ATC enclosed trailer with about 1500lbs in it. Maybe 4000lbs total? And I only towed it about 5 miles at a time. The only other one was a 1991 K5 Blazer that I towed my Chevelle and the same car trailer with (about 6000lbs total). Both the 2500 and the K5 were stock.
