After my rear-ending, I'm looking to add something on the hitch for a bit more protection.

I'm looking at these 3 on Amazon. I like the battering ram design of the pintle plate (only 6" shank).

Any thoughts? Something better? Prefer solid steel, no plastic/rubber.

I bought a Rough Country from Amazon for $649 after my rear ender. Was a $120 bucks cheaper than OEM. Also is tougher, weighs more, has built in steps, cutouts for the exhaust and hitch. Took an hour to install with a friend and it all matched up including the sensors. Although the LED license plate lights that they gave sucks and I had to buy one and then drill holes to install. But it sure beats the POS that comes stock. Rough Country Heavy Duty Bumper 10775.

Any of the three you pictured would be better than nothing, but I agree a better bumper would be the best choice.
** I have to admit that after I read the title of your thread I thought maybe you were in jail and looking for some advice----LOL

Lol. I was thinking what brand of "protection" would be the most durable.

don't think any of those will do what you are looking for. Heavier total bumper is the only thing that might do something towards your goal - and NOT screw up the actual frame. I know down here a few fellas ended up going to bigger ranch hand bumpers, heavy guage, they work, but are pricy. good luck.

I best the last two would just punch right thru the grill of the car/truck hitting you, and there would still be considerable impact to your bumper proper. Been there done that.

If you're not looking for a bumper this is what I have on my Durango and Ram. Sorry no pic of the Ram right now. If you see in the pic we got rear ended and it almost totaled the other car and the shop said it saved us over $3000 in repairs. Now if you have a 5th gen Ram with rear parking sensors. You have to shut them off. I never liked them anyway because of the auto braking. Sorry for the long rant. View attachment 194736

Which model is this? Looks to be different than the spare bumper variety.

This is the
Go Rhino! 360PS Polished Stainless Steel HitchStep for 2" Receivers. I got it on Amazon for $150.
I also got this one
DNA MOTORING HITST-2-4O-111-BK-T1 Class III 4" Oval Hitch Step on Amazon for $60.

Any hit hard enough to bend the hitch or rear frame is going to be hard enough to destroy most of the back end of the truck—tailgate, box, the works. The OEM bumpers are just pretty covers and have little strength. In a low speed or low-level impact the bumper will fold like paper and wrap itself into the box, so you’re into repairing or replacing painted sheet metal. DAMHIKT.

Personally, I’d rather have a protector in the hitch socket and have a chance at avoiding serious damage from a small bump, and depend upon insurance to repair or replace the truck in a major hit. And if you think a massive steel aftermarket bumper is the answer...where do you think that bumper mounts? No different than a hitch in terms of frame damage.

I got lightly bumped at a stoplight several months ago. The girl’s import car submarined a bit under my hitch stinger a few inches, ZERO damage to my truck. Her car had a nice crease in the hood, that meshed nicely with the old body damage already on her car, so I just sent her on her way. But I do think I’m going to invest in a protector/step of some sort, and I like the angled one that was posted earlier by Potatomafia

Best,
DG

When im not actively towing something i flip my drop hitch over.
Started doing that after seeing a car rearend a Grand Cherokee at a stoplight.
Its hitch was upside down causing the car to nose dive and lifting the rear of the jeep.
The car was totaled, the jeep hit 4x4 and drove off without a scratch.

Don't take the truck out at night, or in the morning or in the afternoon. actually don't take the RAM out of the garage at all. it's free and nobody will mess with your RAM's butt. of course... how will you deal with aliens or mother nature could be beyond anybody. There are companies out there that can build you an underground bunker that way nobody can tap that truck ***.... Granted, now you will be dealing with the earth core and AOC and the DemocRats climate change BS. You're doomed bro. Lol.

In the meantime perhaps something like this might help :)

I use a reg. hitch and it works to protect your truck ,was rear ended on the highway maybe going about 20 miles per-hour traffic rolling to a slow ,and BAM this guy hits me .Messed his front end of his car up pretty bad >>nothing happened to my truck. The funny thing is the guy was a cop on his way to work .

I got rear ended last year in my GMC 2500 in DC doing maybe 5-10 in stop and go traffic...My hitch punched a hole through his front bumper. I had paint flakes on my receiver ball. I wished him a better day and went about my day.

I won't leave anything in my receiver if I'm not towing as a general rule. Too hard on my shins when I walk around the truck.

I threw my receiver in the trash when I rolled my rear end. I know its just a matter of time before some dumb fool rear ends me. lol
