so how 'funny' would a newer cab look on an old truck? my 72 cab is pretty darn rusted an would be many hours of work just to get it useable. I have a near perfect 92 cab which will essentially swap over no problem. newer cab has way more galvi steel to boot. only major obstacles would be moving the gas tank out of the cab. the only visual difference is the roof line is more squared off. most people probably may not notice but may not flow with the rest of the trucks rounded lines.

do I start cutting and welding or just for go my OCD and swap cabs?

Go for it. The only other difference between the two is the gas tank. 72 has the in cab tank.
