Oddly enough, I did the first oil change on my 2018 2500 6.4 at 3100 miles. The filter was hand tight and that’s it, I didn’t even use the filter wrench.

I torque it hand tight and then one turn with the wrench and it’s been fine. Coming up on oil change 3 soon.

I bought my 2018 new at the end of October and changed it at 3k 2 weeks ago. Man oh man was it a ***** to take off. It was definitely overtighten at factory. Was under the truck for an hour. I got 3 free oil changes from the dealership when i bought the truck but feel better doing it myself along with going full synthetic with Mobil1. Glad this didn't happen to me. Sorry OP.

The filter problems has been well known for a long time. There has been numerous threads about the "over zealous oil filter robot" at the factory. IMHO ALWAYS have the dealer do the first oil change on your new truck.

Mine was the opposite. I needed the filter wrench cus it was on there tight as hell. So who knows what they are doing at the factory. lol.

I did my first recently at 1500 mi. I was surprised how loose both the filter and plug were. They weren't too loose, I just didn't have to struggle -- like I normally do with the first OCI. I've had some Fords in the past -- where I cracked/crushed the filter before it came off.

Jennifer,
When you review the posts and see certain problems that are talked about time after time, do you and your colleagues have any way to report these problems to someone that can get something done about them, other than reporting the problem to the individual dealer. If in fact you represent FCA it would seem like you should have some sort of "pipeline" to someone that can looked into the problem at a corporate level. The two problems talked about in the above posts are just a couple of examples---3rd brake light leaking and oil filter to tight from the factory.

Jay, did you you ever receive a response ?

As some of you who follow my posts know, my filter has backed off and leaked 3 times since I bought this truck new almost three years ago. Dealer has always done all oil changes. They assure me there is nothing wrong with the housing, no cracks, etc. I'm wondering now if indeed the threads may have been damaged at the factory, and that's why the filter eventually loosens on its own?

I trust my dealer techs. My Viper tech, who has 30 years of working on FCA products, tells me he has seen this on Rams, and some Jeeps.

Could very well be. I think the only reason the tech even looked at it any closer was because it gave him such a hard time to remove. Im actually surprised they got the filter off in one piece and undamaged even further. So he actually showed me he put a new dry filter(no oil on the gasket) on and hand tightened it, then removed it and only one quarter of the gasket had oil on it.

Same with my 2018 1500 5.7- filter came right off and the drain plug wasn't too tight either.

Its a good thing you took it to the dealer for the oil change... if you went somewhere else first, the dealership would probably blame the oil change shop. I would probably do the same if I were the dealer, unless this is a more frequent occurrence.

My dealer gave me a card for free oil changes for life, so I plan to let them to it, as long as they don't take all day.

My opinion only. I would get rid of that thing so fast. It's probably the first of many things to happen to it!

So after failing to get the factory filter off myself i decided to let the dealer do the trucks first oil change, just a couple ticks over 2400 miles. After sitting for over an hour and wondering what the hell they were doing to take so long, the lady in the service department handed me a pair of safety glasses and said “i need you to follow me”, i was like “seriously?” She brings me to the mechanoc doing the oil change and he explains that when they installed the filter at the factory, they overtightened it to the point it stripped half the threads on the housing, and crushed the rim on the filter itself, he attempted to put a new filter on and when it was tightened he then removed it and showed me that only about one quarter of the gasket was making contact.

Needless to say im not all that impressed, and hopefully not the begginning of a trend for this truck. And to just make it all that mich sweeter, they sent the wrong replacement part, so im currently on day 3 of my oil change. Wonder if thats a record?
Never heard of that - which motor??? Am told on the Hemi that it is near impossible to do as the filter will collapse before it would get that far. Humm. Curious.

The filter is always over tightened from the factory. This is the first time I have heard of it causing damage. Many dealers would have put the filter back on and let you blow the engine. Kudos to your dealer.

PIA for sure, but I suspect your truck will give you years of trouble free driving after the repair.
No, most dealers would NOT put it back on and let you ruin the motor. Where the hell do you live, with dishonest folks I guess. Not a dealer I know would ever do that. And btw the factory filter are, yes put on by a computer and the EXACT torque they are supposed to be. And if you check you will find those factory filter are much better made than the aftermarket crap who will collapse at factory torque specs, except a couple - K&N, Mobil 1.

You need to do some research on filters.

Read some of the experiences some on here have had with their dealers.

Yes there are cheap aftermarket filters (I include K&N in that group, btw) but there are LOTS of GOOD aftermarket filters.

I would put the stock filter somewhere between the cheap aftermarkets and the good ones. But to say stock is better than most aftermarket filters is not true.

Bought a new 2016 late in 2016 did my first oil change took about a hour to get filter off. I did take pics of the stripped out filter lucky though 29k miles and not a problem it didn't hurt the threads just the filter.

Dont feel bad OP, my truck is in for a blown head gasket at 10,000 miles.
Oil poring right out of the front of the cylinder head between the block and head.
I`m sure they`ll screw it up worse doing the repair job. I`ve never had luck with any dealership doing the job right.

Bought my 18 in April abd did my own 1st service at 5k. Filter and drain plug were just right. Only took a little pressure on each and spun right off.
