What’s everyone’s opinion on Ram coming out with a larger motor to compete with Fords new 7.3? If so when do you think it will happen? Any rumors?

Well sounds good but the bigger the motor the higher your car insurance goes up

How many years has GM's 6.0 been in production and still is...about 20yrs. It's a proven reliable motor aside from the exhaust manifold studs. Definitely underpowered for a 2500 towing much. My 6.4 with 4.10's is a beast compared to those.

The 2019 model year was the last for the 6.0. GM now has a 6.6 gas with 401 HP and 464 lb-ft of TQ.

All good things come with compromise, and the Power Wagon is no exception. Thanks to its soft off-road-oriented suspension, it sports the lowest payload and tow capacity of the Ram 2500 lineup, at 1,660 pounds and 10,330 pounds, respectively. After breezing along with a 7,500-pound trailer—roughly three-quarters of its max tow capacity—we attached a 10,500-pound trailer. People go over weight all the time, so why not see what happens?

Answer? Not much. Thanks to the gobs of power produced by its 6.4-liter V-8 and its well-geared transmission, the legally overstressed Power Wagon proved that chasing max tow numbers is a fool's errand, as it handily out-dragged the Silverado 2500 with the same trailer. "That's max tow?" Evans asked. "No doubt at all it's suspension-limited. It feels like it could take thousands of pounds more and still accelerate better than GM's gas 2500s."

This is from motortrends article. This is why the 6.4l hasn't been improved upon. The 8spd did all it needed too.

So, if it ain't broke don't fix it is their marketing scheme

In posting #19, Crash68 reflects back to Lamborghini doing the R&D on the Viper V10. They may have done all the details but wasn't it originally based upon a 360 CID upsized by adding 2 more cylinders? Just look at the bore and stroke (4.00 x 3.58) to see what I'm talking about. Am I wrong?

You can bet your bottom dollar that FCA will bring out the 426 sporting 450/480 range. Were still knee deep in the horsepower wars.

Wonder, since owning my 14 2500 with the 6.4 if there couldn't be a manual "performance" selection. Not sure now with the new 8 speed trans but sure felt that there could have been a performance mode as well. Did fool the computer a couple of times and the engine had a substantial momentary increase in power. Also, now with the 8 speed gearing thinking the , the performance should be much better overall for towing. Sill out to lunch on how the 8 sped will hold up when used in a heavy duty application or towing. Would be curious to hear from some of the 2500/3500 owners with the 8 speed on actual towing performance... I re geared to 4.56 and that really helped but at a substantial cost.

I think somebody here put up a good towing thread and really liked the 6.4 8 spd combo.

Unfortunately those numbers don’t translate to driveability due to the transmission. I don’t get what is so difficult about making a good 6 speed auto. The Ford Torque Shift G in the gas F250 is amazing compared to the GM and Ram 6 speeds.

The Ram 8 speed is awesome to drive. Be interesting to see how the 8HP75 fairs in fleet service. What is the service interval on towing?

trans not best for towing.

Understatement of the year :)

Try putting an 11,000# 5th wheel behind it with 3.73 gears. The engine is a total beast when you can keep it in the power band (generally, above 3500 RPMs). That 1-2 gear gap is just a killer, though.

I have to imagine the new 8spd is just a total game changer. I haven't been hanging out in this section of the board much since I own a 2014 (and am trying with everything I've got to not go buy a new truck) but I've read a bit and guys are pulling up to 15,000# trailers with good results. Pretty impressive with a gas engine.

A new engine or even some increased numbers from the current 6.4 would just be icing on the cake.

I just don't get why the dealers can't adjust/modify shift points to optimize the combination. When not towing my truck is awesome.

It's really not a shift point issue as much as it's the gear ratios. Yes, the 66rfe also shifts like crap but even when you just do is manually there is still the large gap between first and second no matter what you do. Ram make a huge mistake trying to save a couple bucks and just borrow the same ratios from the 68rfe that goes with most diesel trucks. The lugging is fine with the low end torque of the diesel but is a death sentence when towing heavy with a gasser.
