Well you may be an independent shop owner and pushing him that way.

I've had good experiences with Pep Boys.

Also, the OP could have gone to PepBoys for a quote first and then possibly negotiated a better price with the dealer.
I'm not in any auto shops, I've just found that it's best to find a reputable and capable mechanic or shop and stick with them. Pep boys caters to quick fix jobs and typically a good mechanic won't work there or if so as a short job while they find better employment. Not saying all Pep Boys techs are bad but quite a few are. It's like oil changes, I wouldn't waste my time at the quick change places like Jiffy Lube, I've heard many nightmares from them including my son who drove away from an oil change. He got less than a mile down the road and the oil light went on, they left the filter loose. Now I'm not saying all Jiffy Lube guys are bad but a much higher percentage are.

Because I have about 10 independent shops closer to me than my nearest Pep Boys.

PB isnt any cheaper here and Id rather support a small business (especially in our current financial environment).

But, you do you and try to fire up an argument.

I'm with you, we don't have pep boys here but we have several pep boys like chain garages and I wouldn't go or send someone to them unless they were the only option in town in an emergency situation. And even then, I'd have to warn the person that they will try to rip them off. Not saying all local garages are angels either, but around my area all the chain garages routinely try to ripoff unsuspecting people who don't know any better. As trustworthy as a car dealer.

By all means people can go where they want, but I'd put that up there with going to the dealer to replace a water pump out of warranty. Should be easy enough to ask around to see who has a good trustworthy local garage, and give them the work and save some money. Dealer can handle my expensive or difficult warranty work, otherwise they would never touch my truck. My cousin owns a garage in town, that makes my choice super easy but even if he didn't, I know another local garage I would be going to.

If he starts it once a month to get it to operating temp, no issues. It’s the long sit times that will allow seals to dry up.

I had to have the water pump in my 2014 Hemi Jeep Grand Cherokee replaced at around 45K miles in 2016. It does sound like there might have been a bad batch of 2014s. That's interesting, though, because my 2014 JGC was actually built in like 2/2013. They started the 2014 MY early for the refresh.

Smelled antifreeze and opened the hood. Saw some dripping from water pump. Small puddle on floor was orange rusty color. Drove to dealership and yep. New water pump. I thought 62,000 was a little premature. $1000 in parts and labor, coolant flush. View attachment 199573
You were running mud through your system for quite awhile and it took out your water pump.

I agree and Pep Boys is the high school of mechanics.

Did they do a cooling system flush or just fill it back up? I’m amazed at the amount of crap that comes out of the cooling systems on these vehicles. I’m going to flush mine but with a pump and a filter.

I flushed the cooling system on my wifes old 1986 Acura Legend. The stench of the stuff that came out of there, it was horrendous.

We actually ran water through the block because it was overheating something fierce....the rusty water that came out I couldnt believe it. Ran water through until it came out clear, drained it all back out then refilled with fresh coolant. Worked perfectly for 10+ years after that.

They did complete flush and put in new. I’ve never seen antifreeze look that rusty in any vehicle I have ever owned.

Makes you wonder about the 10yr/150000 antifreeze. They could put lifetime on it and it’s still going to have to be drained and replaced for a water pump or hoses. I wonder if they even try to get the sand out when they cast these blocks. I’ve got 5300 miles on mine and it looks like mud in the puke tank.
