Sometimes my truck has a loud roaring noise that kicks in. The first time it happened was when I was towing a trailer up a long hill. I assume this is some sort of fan.

But over the weekend, the noise was kicking in when the truck was cold and I was driving up a very minor little rise in the road.

So is this just a fan I'm hearing, or something else? I assume nothing to worry about.

Most likely the cooling fan, if it keeps happening when cold you might want to have the dealership take a look.

Yea, most likely the fan clutch not unlocking, i believe is what causes it. Mine has done it on and off over the years, mainly when the truck is cold, and gets louder when speeding up until the clutch finally unlocks.

I have found, not only when the truck is not warm yet, but when the defrost or a/c is on and the a/c compressor is engaged then the fan clutch will engage more often even after the truck is up to operating temperature.

Is there a way to test the clutch?

My Silverado did it. It sounded a little like a turbo for about the first mile, then it would just fade away. Did it for years.

i think theres some type of viscous fluid in the clutch. it may be partially engaged for a short time then fade away. if its full engaged in normal circumstances then something wrong with it

Update the fan is now stuck on all the time. The new clutch should be here next week sometime. Stuck on is better than stuck off I suppose.

I had the one in my 2016 replaced. Yes, they're designed to fail engaged so as not to overheat the motor. I actually drove with mine locked in for about a month until I could get a replacement. Other than a decrease in MPG and the annoyance, it won't harm anything.

Make sure to get an OEM replacement if you can. The aftermarkets don't have the best reputation for reliability.

I ordered it from All Mopar Parts but it is pretty disappointing that failed in less than 3 years

There was a bad batch of them at one point (at least from what I was told on the 2016s). I believe they've solved it. But hey, like anything man made... it's at risk to fail. FCA products in general don't seem to care for aftermarket cheaper made parts. I've never had much success using anything non-OEM that has an electrical connection (sensors, etc..).

Update. Replaced the fan clutch drive with oem. Works perfectly now. It must have been going out for a while. The truck sounds completely different than it used to.

I used an 1 7/8 open end wrench and a ratchet strap on the water pump to the frame. Really a super easy job.
