So truck should be built any day now. Never left a deposit for those who don't know me. It was a no obligation deal that dealer did. I have been looking for a couple months for a truck new or used. I told myself I would get a used if the deal was good enough. I've been weighing pros and cons of both and man that price tag is one big con on the ram. The f350 is a nice truck. It had Some rust on the tail gate and a tiny bit on bottom of doors. Guy had it rust proofed but stopped doing the annual resprays. It needs a muffler. Other than that it seems solid. Guy seemed really honest and pointed out any negatives. I told him I am hesitant to buy a plow truck with the constant stress on the tranny. yeah, why am I looking at it right? He said he changed the fluid every year. It did look like new. Just looking for comments, advice etc. I could buy 3 of those trucks for the price of the new raM. But if I buy the ram, I'll have a paid off and still like new truck in about 6 years. With the Ford, I'll have a 14 year old truck with who knows what.

If the bottom of the doors are rusting it is only a matter of time before they start rusting out. It is a 3 valve v10 which means at 70k those spark plugs are pretty much permanently there on a 8 year old truck. Gas mileage will be 10 or 11 mpg's no matter what you do, vs the 6.4 that will get between 12 and 18 (summer driving). If he hasn't done any front end work I bet it will need ball joints and tie rods etc. If you are willing to spend some money on it go for it, but otherwise no way. If you are even considering a 2007 truck why didn't you just order a Tradesman 2500 ram instead of a bighorn? It's not like that Ford has that many options even being a lariet.

I wouldn't. I came from a 08 F350, and that truck is at its age where small things are starting to happen. Some of these small things are all day or all weekend fixes.

IMHO, its not worth the unreliability and not worth the price.

Do you want to cheap out now and make it up (some) in maintenance and repairs and have to deal with that? Or spend it now and have a nice new truck that won't need much work done to it?

70k mile plow truck thats almost 10 years old.....ask yourself if you want something that you dont have to worry about or if you want to save a few bucks and have to fix things. its at the point where its going to need things like brakes, wheel bearings, front end, suspension, etc soon. a truck like that will nickel and dime you. it doesnt matter how easy he was on it, a truck with a plow gets beat up. not to mention i would probably buy an older higher mileage 7.3 powerstroke before i bought a v10.

I don't understand the logic. I understand the price tag seems high but no one pays close to those prices. My last 2 Rams I got almost $10k off the first one and $12k off my second one. If this was my decision and I had my mind already set on a Ram truck I would not be looking for an older truck that was used as a plow. Those trucks take a beating everywhere (suspension, body panels, etc). There's always one thing you can bet on with a plow truck, its been around salt.

I've followed your posts regarding a new truck, and I understand plans change, but I personally wouldn't deviate from what you want. If you want a beater truck then go for it but if you want a reliable truck that you can take on trips and daily drive then get the new truck (or newer used truck).

i came from a big horn so I am trying to avoid downgrading in trim. The truck I am waiting for is a 3500 with a 51k msrp. I'm thinking they will do43 at best. This is Ny. I could care less about mpg. I am trying to stay Away from diesel for 4 reasons: infrequent towing, horror stories I've read about maintenance/repairs, less than5 mile commute to work (in the cold north), price of diesel fuel. I need a one ton for payload cause of the heavy tongue weights of toy hhauler. They are around 3k. A 3/4 wouldn't do it. Although I would love to have the diesel for the 1 trip we have planned to Virginia, I know the 6.4 is going to struggle in the hills. But that's probably the only time I will really need a diesel. You guys are right. I'm buying an almost 10 year old truck. I'll lube up and go down to the dealer when it comes in. Just want some reassurance. I really don't want to leave you guys anyway :)

I went thru the same new vs. used battle before buying mine. Assuming payments when u don't HAVE too is a struggle but man once the deal was all done and I drove my new one away, I was beyond happy with the decision. Don't short change urself, buy the truck u want with the options u want and you'll never look back. As long as the payment is feasible, even if the dollar amount is higher than that magical limit you set yourself by a couple $K, you'll forget all about that once youre driving away with the truck you wanted to begin with.

I used to live in Rochester, NY, so I'm very familiar with all of the road salt that they use everywhere. It's great for driving around safely, but horrible for the vehicle. Buying used might be a good idea, but you'd probably be better off buying a truck from an area that doesn't use so much salt.

I can understand, I faced the upgrade and downgrade decision between 1500 and 2500. The fact is you'll pay more just for the equal trim model on a 2500 (ie big horn 1500 and big horn 2500). If you want to stay in a price range it comes down to accepting a Tradesman/SLT for the price, but getting the added payload of the 2500 in addition to the 6.4. I will tell you though, if you can swing it, get what you want in the truck you want.

I just don't like how **** I am with new trucks. I worry about every scratch, park far away from everyone etc my last truck was black which was worse. At least this one shouldn't be as bad cause I ordered white. I know it's just a truck

Yepp I still don't have any door dings... My side step does it got nailed but it saved my truck I hope it bent there damn door!

Honestly 15 seems high for that truck and it doesn't have the features you want there will always be the what if senario but I can say one thing I defenitly settled on my truck and I'm not happy about it.

that's why I didn't want the tradesman. I'm an all or nothing guy (Usually) If I get something new. If it's used,I'll settle. Think I'm just going to get this rig(New ram) and take it to krown (been thinking about that or ziebart) and try and keep it as long as possible.

As a guy who works on cars every day you couldn't give me a Ford. A lot of people think I'm biased because I drive a ram, but I drive a ram because I see the nightmares in everything else. Ford's seem to break about as often as chevys, and they're both equally terribly engineered. If you want to go used, get a used ram, stay far far away from the other big 2. I picked up my 2010 1500 CC for 13,900. Just my 2 cents.

I would stay away from the older rams though only cause of their trannys and I had one. I think it was a 2001 quad cab 1500. it was only a couple years old. But, the newer ones of course are night and day difference. Was it the 46 or 48 trannys with the problems. I know mine was fairly new and it was slipping. I've always had dodge vehicles. Except my first truck(suv) was a Nissan pathfinder. talk about solid! Bought it in 88. Had it 14 years. Engine ran like new. But body was just falling apart.
