I did what you're doing with a '76 K5 Blazer. Moved lumber for my 16x24' deck without a trailer or that nice gizmo you built. Difference is, I installed a 1 Ton suspension with 13 leaf springs on each side in that *****. Rode smooth as glass. That day. No other days! Don't set up your truck for something you probably won't ever really need again. You will hate it (when nobody's lookin'). Blazer rode like it had iron bars for shocks all the other days, I just didn't tell nobody I fu(ked up.

Nahh on the 2nd paragraph. The kid part.
Do you tow a lot ? Or haul a lot of the time?

If I go the “kid” route, it would be more of an off-road build. The D-60’s so I could run larger tires without fear of blowing a unit bearing, and to ditch the IFS. The bags and links are for a stable yet flexible and adjustable suspension.
An added bonus would be the ability to carry more weight, and still have a nice ride.

This is hella smart... going to have to let my father-in-law see. He's got a '18 1500 with the crew cab/short bed.

Great job but in looking at it I might have done 1 thing a little different. Switch /swap the location of the slip joint for the upright so that it's horizontal rather than vertical. That way you could slide the support forward and backward for varying lengths of whatever you're hauling. Just my way of looking at it. Great job.

8’ lumber would only be a couple inches past the tailgate(see first pic), 10’ lumber sets on the support, and 12’ sticks past the support by about 24”. Anything over 12 feet long, and I’ll be using my trailer. For me at least, this configuration works about perfectly.
I have a couple other “attachments” that will work with it as well, like the log holder that I built last year, and the hammock hanger that I’m currently working on.
