1500 for a 2500 such a deal. How much rougher would a 2500 empty be compared to our 1500?

Maybe :)

We have a 2019 RAM Laramie 4X4 that is 14 months old with 8000 miles. I looked up the trade in value and was flabbergasted!

Anyway, my point. We are very happy with the RAM we have. The only reason I would consider trading in is for a 2500. Similarly optioned. And of course depending on financing.

We tow a trailer and are within weight limits. But we are thinking 5th wheel some day.

My big question. How much rougher would a 2500 empty be compared to our 1500? Comfort is important to a couple of old farts :p

we traded out 17 1500 RCSB for a 20 2500 CC. The 1500 is 2wd, the 2500 4wd. The 1500 was much easier to drive, mainly because of size. If I was driving the 2500 as much as I drove my 1500, I would be unhappy. I drove my 1500 for work, but they provided me with a company truck.

Highway ride is not much different, but on dirt roads it rides rougher. If you need the 2500, there's not much you can do. Also, being 4wd could cause some of this also. It is also harder to get into, we had to get the steps.

Good luck, if you need a 2500, you can't go wrong with the Ram. It's just a different animal than the 1500.

I'm comfortable riding in the 2500 empty. Pulling a 29 foot Coachmen Catalina is smooth, and easy. Enjoy the upcoming camping season.

I went from a 2019 1500 to a 2019 2500, zero regrets. It does ride firmer, but not really that bad. I traded out because we bought a 34' camper

My truck rides very smooth and comfortable. I went from a 1500 regular cab 2 wheel drive to a 2500 crew cab 4x4.

Thanks for the info guys. The "War Department" is the one I am going to have to worry about with the ride. We will be going for a test drive soon.

Have fun.

My wife had ailments where certain vibration and shock are pain to her in short order. My 2013 RAM 2500 was fine to her it was a CCSB 4x4.

Our 2020 RAM 3500 rides unloaded slightly rougher because it's a dually. the SRW 3500was not much different from my 2500.

I bring this up because you mentioned buying a 5th wheel.

You need to know what the gross weight of the 5th wheel you are considering are. Easy to be close to 3500 SRW payload with up to the 36 footers. And the bigger ones are in DRW territory.

In all levels, the higher the trim, the lower the payload. I like to have 25% extra capacity for the trailers I own.

Planning now can help avoid disappointment later in having an under sized truck.

I have read many tales of regret over the years from people who bought the truck first and the trailer second.

Usually from those who bought a 2500 without realizing the payload limitations, and especially when fifth wheels are involved.

It’s safer to choose the cart before you buy the horse. What’s the rush?

Just did exactly what your asking. Just traded our '17 1500 CC Hemi with only 22,790 miles on it for a '20 2500 Limited CCSB CTD last week. Yes it rides a bit harsher over the bad roads but not bad at all, nice and smooth on the highway. We pull a trailer and while it weighs out a 6,500 lbs this truck will make way more enjoyable towing. And it's my DD and I don't think it's any worse around town. With active steering it feels light on the wheel, seriously the only real difference for me is the added height and the sound of the diesel. Oh yeah we're old farts too and I have two collapsed discs in my back, pretty sure if i can be comfortable anybody can.

Thanks. Appreciate the info.
I am aware of the payload issues. After reading all the horror stories in here and RV forums. Our rig has limitations we are within limits but have to keep the weight out of the bed. Not a biggie. It handles very well.

Have fun

Great. How did you make out on the trade?

Not sure I want a diesel. But we shall see.

Have fun

Not bad actually, I was surprised since I've never traded in a vehicle before. I was going to sell privately but since I'm high risk for covid the wife didn't want me near anyone coming to look at the truck. KBB in very good condition was $37,300 and we settled on $33,500. Yeah I lost money per se but it kept her happy, I did strip some of the add-ons before doing so which I've already got somebody buying so it worked out. Best part was we we're looking for a Laramie again but loaded the way we wanted wanted was msrp of around $77K. Found this limited which most of the stuff is standard on and it had most of the add-ons we wanted listed at $79,900. Took three hours of haggling but walked out the door with it for $67,800, darn 2500's are expensive! Overall we're happy and glad we went diesel, thing has loads of power.

Great Sounds like a good deal! Best of luck!

I traded my 17 1500 ccsb big horn for a 19 tradesman 2500 ccsb with the 6.4 and I have no regrets when towing the my camper, and that was the purpose. I do however miss my 1500 for daily driving mainly gas mileage and ride comfort but I think the comfort thing is the bighorn options to tradesman and the slight roughness. They ram heavy duty trucks ride much nicer than Ford and chevy. I’m very happy with my truck but I’m not sure I’d be able to drive it everyday, it’s thirsty.

A used Gen 5 1500 with a 392 gear set pulls my 30 foot 5th with the greatest of ease. 15+ rotors haul it down fast. A set of AirLift 5000's for 130 bucks or axel mounted if your pin weight is above a 1000#
Find a year old Gen 5 a turn in on that. Without going to research wholesale on my 19' LH is likely 40 at best which stickered at 83K 24 months ago
A 2500 will best you up around town, my cousin who farms had a 1500, traded for a 2500 thinking he should have one, traded back to a 1500 with air suspension but stay away from that as it is Kryptonite to everyone
The coil mounted bags take at the most an hour to install as you don't even remove the coils. The axle mounts take a few hours at the most

If you're wanting to avoid the hard sell and want to really try one out I suggest renting one for a day. Small expense compared to the big expense that you might regret. Drive it for a day, park it, take the wife out etc. Also, if thinking 5th wheel see if you can live with 3500 since the 2500 only has enough payload for a smaller 5th wheel trailer.
