any guys running a 180 T-stat in there trucks up north during the winter ? this may seem like a silly question, but i was just curious if there are any negative effects of this motor by keeping the motor 20-30 degrees cooler during winter months. ( philadelphia )

I never realized how cheap they are so i think im going to purchase one when i order a catch can. Figure its gonna improve the way my truck runs then why not right ?. then get my truck with a 91 or 93 tune ! she will be running cool and strong !

I'm hesitant to do so up here in Canada lol. Let me know how it works out though.

I do. Hard on MPGs in the winter but thats about the only difference.

Was -10c earlier this week one morning. No problems.

180 thermostat will do nothing for you without a tune. It will only kill your mpgs. Your stock PCM will keep trying to get the temp up on the truck since it will think its to cold and will run the startup map longer. This will cause you to run rich pretty much all the time since your truck will never get to temp.

Does it still hurt mpg with a tune?

How much of a gain in power do you think compared to the loss in mpg

it actually didnt hurt my mpgs at all with or without the tune but i dont live in a really cold place either. if your planning on getting a custom tune hemifever usually reccomends you run one anyways since it makes the truck run alot better if its running at 180 degrees instead of the 205 it does from factory. But like i said i live in houston where its never really cold so it might be different for you

I took mine out for the winter - the combo of winter gas and the 180 tstat was slowly making my mpgs worse as it got colder. Most of my drives are pretty short so the truck never really had a chance to warm up - basically the 180 tstat without a tune just made the truck take longer to warm up. I put the stock 203 back in and mpgs got a little better. I didnt feel any difference in performance, but once again, im not tuned... YET :D

My Experience with the 180 stat in colder weather was I got Too Many "your Truck took to Long to warm up" Cel/Code as I pulled into work after a 10 minute drive so I pulled it out and enjoyed the Heat! Only benefit I can see now to put another one in would be during summer Months when I Tow. The 180 Stat is very noticeable on my LX Car along with the Fan's adjusted down 20 degrees but it gets parked for the winter in Oct so no worries there.

ok i guess i will hold off then on the purchase. I dont push my truck to extremes, as most of my commutes are not long at all, and i do not tow.

This is why we ask questions, and i thank you gentleman who answered my mine.

I think you are making the right call not to put in the 180* thermostat. It really isn't going to help at all unless you are severely working the truck. Running cooler slows down the evaporation rate of gas in the intake. That means the ECU has to add more fuel to get the target AFRs. That is why you get crap mileage when you first start your truck up in the morning.

I ran my 07 QC with the 180 Tstat last winter in Wisconsin and didn't see anything different than during the summer. I also had the DS inTune running a box tune.
