Hey all. I have a 2002 1500 5.9 4x4 on which I am trying to replace the hub/bearing assembly. I have seen 1aauto's video on it. Looks good, but I have hit a snag. I cannot get the cv axle (I think that's what it's called) to fully disengage from the shaft coming from the differential. In the video, as well as discussions I've seen elsewhere, they take a prybar to move it and then muscle it off. I couldn't get mine to move with a prybar, so I put a piece of wood against it and hit with a sledge. Got it to move, but I can't get it all the way. In the video, the cv axle boots seem a lot more plyable/flexible than those on my truck ... they really don't have give. Any suggestions for getting this separated so I can get on with my project? I think I attached a copy of a picture I took. Appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

Here's a comment I found on the youtube video, not sure if it'll help?
Hopefully someone with someone with more expertise will chime in soon. :)
Also, I notice you posted this in the DIY section, I'd put it in General Discussion. A moderator may move your thread for ya.

"I have a 2005 dodge ram 4x4. It had a 36mm axle nut. Also to get the cv shaft out you had to loosen the to nut on the steering knuckle and knock the steering knuckle free. There wasn't enough clearance to get the shaft out without knocking the steering knuckle free. My truck probably has a different package or something. Just a heads up for anyone working on a 2005."

Looks Like Your Almost off the splined diff axle right there and only have another 3/4 of an inch to go. So if the 1/2 shaft is free to move outbound (including the end out at the hub) just use more wood to help you pry it off. Looks like the O ring that helps to keep the water out of there failed, hence the rust seizure. Before re-assembly clean splines real good and coat lightly with anti sieze and slide a new O ring all the way onto the diff axle sticking out of the pumpkin as well as a new c-clip) both readily available at the dealer for like a buck a piece, and if the parts guy says can't get them go to another dealer.

Edit: Took another look at your Photo, looks pretty good actually considering age. My comments still stand how ever if the shaft is truly free and out of the Hub end then you should be able to put your hand on there and pull that straight out and off. If the shaft is still in the Hub assembly at the other end then you were lucky to get it back as far as you did. I do not beleive in the photo that it would be stuck or siezed given the position on the splines. You probably have it off already. Danny

If its your first time and follow the procedure of removing the lower shock bolt, tie-rod end and upper ball joint nuts and you will get the clearance required. To remove the hub nut stick a crow bar or prybar accross the wheel studs and when you loosen it will grab in the pavement or against your jack to allow you to loosen the bolt, which I beleive is torqued at about 185.
