Hi I have read that the 2007 to 2012 6.7 litre diesel water pump is compatible with 3rd gen 5.9 litre diesel engines, having an extra blade on the impeller which promotes better cooling. Is this correct? My truck is a 2003 5.9 litre diesel 3500 heavy duty. Thanks in advance for any info.

You are correct the the 6.7 Cummins water pump is a compatible part with the 5.9 Cummins and is a direct swap. There are several aftermarket water pumps available for the 5.9 and 6.7 Cummins. Some of them have plastic impellers and some have steel. Some of the 5.9 pumps from the aftermarket have a steel impeller with 6 blades which is the oddball pump to me because I have only seen a few of them and they were purchased through Advanced Auto Parts in Texas and Missouri.

In my professional opinion the 6.7 Cummins water pump is a superior part compared to the O.E. 5.9 Cummins water pump. When I am working on 5.9 and 6.7 Cummins trucks I only use the O.E. Cummins parts for these trucks unless my customers ask for something different or they supply something else other than original equipment.
