I have an 04 Ram 1500 with the 4.7l V8 and 213k miles. I am preparing to do a total engine rebuild soon. I have always wanted to have a truck like this with a manual transmission. My first truck was a 94 F-250 with a 5 speed, and I enjoyed that, but the granny low gear wasn't the most fun because I wasn't towing all the time.

After looking at the manual transmissions offered in the Ram, I wanted to go with a 2005-2008 transmission, the Getrag G238 6-speed, rather than the 5-speed offered in the 04 and below. I have some questions about doing this swap, chief among them is if it's possible.

I have found a couple 2007 and 2008 Ram 1500s with the 6 speed for sale for a good price near me, and would it be possible to pull the transmission from a newer model truck and put it in mine? And then what about the ECU? Will it need to be modified for the manual?

If I think of any more questions I will add them.

If you’ve got access to an ‘08 4.7 6spd, why not get the 310hp motor, tranny, electronics, etc from that truck and swap over? Would be cheaper and more effective than a performance rebuilt on your old 4.7

Cant answer your question, but will say that my ‘08 4.7 6spd has been a blast to drive (for a truck). Bought new in April ‘08 and now approaching 400k miles
