Hi Team,
I have a 2005 ram 1500, I was driving down the road and the truck died, so I put it neutral and started it up and put it back in drive it drove a short distance and then wouldn’t got forward or back. The pan has been drop and there is metal shavings in the pan. I am told that it’s has good pressure for the tranny fluid and that the drive shaft probably broke off. Is this common or a good possibility. It makes a wine when you try and put it in drive or reverse

Couple of things to do first that can help you verify the issue at hand.

Chock the wheels and set the parking brake. Start the engine and put the trans in reverse.

Do you hear the whining sound? Look under the truck and see if the driveshaft is turning?

If the driveshaft is turning with the wheels chocked and the brake set then we have an issue in the rear diff.

Now, put the trans in drive and retest to see if the driveshaft is turning just to verify you have the same condition in a forward gear or reverse gear.

For the suggestion that the driveshaft may be "broke off", if that was the case you wouldn't have metal shavings in the bottom of the trans pan.

Did a shop tell you the trans had good oil pressure? What other diagnostics did they do? Did they say the trans was okay? And it was a driveshaft issue?

Lemme know what's up! Also, what engine and how many miles?
