I picked up a 2006 ram 1500 5.7 with a dropped intake valve seat it was overheated. I have cylinder heads from a 03 5.7 hemi that have been sitting in my garage ready to go for years however from what I can tell they fit 03-05 but not 2006? what is the difference? I did notice this engine is setup with coil on plug instead of the older 03 style with wires.

Same head, 03 doesn't have the EGR port opened up on the passenger side whereas 04-08 do. Interchange probably say different because starting in 2006 half tons got MDS. You either have to open the port up, delete EGR from your truck (requires custom tune) or find an 04-08 passenger head.

ok thanks didn't even realize 06 had mds haven't tore into it yet will be removing that for sure. Also my drivers side head is the bad one currently so probably could get away with using one and resurfacing pass side with egr hopefully.

You can use the newer coil packs if you want, you'll just need adapters.

Can't he just reuse the valve covers off the 06 on the 03 heads? I'm just wondering because I had assumed all the bolt holes would line up on the valve cover. If I'm having a duh moment here, please excuse it :33:

Yes. Bolts on the same. Think I forgot this was going INTO an 06 truck lol and was mentioning the upgrade.

They are. It's a straight swap. I forgot you were installing into an 06. The 06-08 vc's and coils are an upgrade for the 03-05's with adapters or replaced connectors. They're factory equipment on your 06. If you plan to rip MDS out you'll need non-MDS lifters and a non-MDS cam. There are enough subtle differences that the MDS cam seems to wipe out non-MDS lifters after a fashion. Good time for an upgrade.
