Im trying to figure out why my fan isnt kicking on my truck
I have an 06 dodge ram dually. 5.9.

Started to notice the truck overheating when idling. Noticed my fan isnt kicking on.
Not sure if its a relay, the fan controller or the fan clutch.
I tried to move the clutch earlier by hand and I can feel resistance but it does move when the truck isnt on. Yes there is coolant and it doesnt overheat when I drive, being the air is moving through the radiator and cooling it down.

If it matters, I have no A/C in the truck. Bought it that way and the fan worked before even with the A/C being out.

Need to get this truck back on the road so it can work asap.
Any help would be great.

Take a look underneath the truck at the viscous fan wiring and make sure it didn't get caught in the fan and cut the harness. Pretty common issue.

The viscous fan is electronically controlled by the ECM. The ECM commands the fan speed based on several m factors.

The ECM monitors coolant temperature, intake manifold temperature, air conditioning pressure and transmission oil temperature. Based on cooling requirements, the ECM sends a signal to the viscous fan clutch to increase or decrease the fan speed so make sure the wiring and connector are indeed intact.

Fan speed is monitored by the ECM. Fan speeds above or below a calibrated threshold will set a DTC. Circuit concerns will also set fan clutch DTC's.

I can say that I dont have any codes for the fan. But I will check that in the morning. Do the wires just drop straight down the center/front of the truck? Ill report back in the AM.

The wiring comes from the center of the fan, straight down towards the bottom of the fan shroud and the connector is on the driver side of the engine next to the crank sensor.

So from what I can tell the harness look fine. Checked the plug under the truck and its intact. Started to truck up and the fan spins on startup. But the fan doesnt engage when It gets hot. When I turn the truck off, I can spin the fan but not easily. You can feel resistance. It doesnt free spin.

Check for a blown fuse in the PDM. If the electrical fan does not come on when you turn on the A/C either relay wiring or Fuse. You should also have 2 or even 3 fans for the truck. One of the fans should be attached to the water pump housing or runs off of the belt via a pully. You might have one or two other electrical fans located either next to the mechanical fan or in front of the radiator. Those can go bad and you might not ever see them.

Well my AC doesnt work and I have it disconnected right not (just unplugged) Im actually ordering a new compressor and condensor as we speak.

But what do you mean 2 or 3 fans? Theres only one on my truck on the front of the motor. I dont have any electric fans behind or in front of the radiator.

Thant might be your problem. Try reconnecting it and pulling the A/C clutch fan relay in the PDC. Let me check on this first. As long as you have not removed your cooling fan relay the cooling fan should come on when you turn on your AC. If it does not check your cooling fan relay. That relay should be protected by a fuse also.

About 3 months ago the fan wasnt coming and hasnt for the past 3 months. It was parked about a month ago. Today is the first time ive started it and messed with it and now the fan is coming on. The temp would get up too 220* and wouldnt cool down at all when I parked it. I just drove it around my neighborhood for about 10m earlier to heat it up, then had my wife rev it up while I watched it and its coming on now. But it shouldnt go up to 220* period. When my wife revved it up it still got to 210* before kicking on.
But again I dont have any electric fans on the truck. Just the one clutch fan.

Wondering if the fan clutch wire plug maybe dirty or something?
