I apologize in advance for posting a similar question to my previous post but that one went in a different direction and did not really answer my question so I thought I would give this one last shot. First off, I am likely going to change my axle ratio one way shape or form some how, some way. I hate the 3:21! I should have paid attention when I bought my truck. I know that the rear axle is easy but the front seems to be a little more involved. Has anyone out there done this yet? what all is needed in the front whole axle rotor to rotor and shafts or just the differential case? is reprogramming needed? how is the 8spd transmission going to be effected? I am sure this is a warranty issue as well but I got to do it! I hope I am not pioneering this change?

Depends on what sorta gear ratio you wanna go to..if its the optional 3.92s it should just be a straight forward swap without needing modification to the housing

And anything aftermarket will certainly void your warranty

You would need the entire axle. From where the cv's attach to the axle to where the driveshaft attaches to the axle.

Everything for the front from a 06-11 ram then swap in your gears.
For the rear you either need a machined oem lsd or aftermarket dtt with another drivers side axleshaft +gears

Hold up hes asking about gears and axles but if he just wants to go to a higher numerical gear ratio that shouldnt require an entire axle swap, correct? I think he needs to give more info

Welded...... That's so sad. Probably saved 50 cents by not using bolts.

Is it possible to grind off the welds?

I hope you can get it done, Sunday. Can I suggest 4.10s? With an 8 speed, that would be fantastic. I believe your final gear is the as the one in the 5/6. I'm turning 1600 rpm in top gear at 55 mph, so 4.10s really aren't low at all. Think of the take off an 8 with 4.10s would have!

No, it isn't possible to grind the welds.

I do not plan on larger tires. The stock 20's are fine with me. I will not lift the truck. I do have a CAI, Diablo tuner, and muffler delete. I tow snowmobiles and other small trailers and cord wood. All of this should not be an issue with any 1500 even with 3:21's. I have always owned GM trucks with alot less horsepower but with 3:73 or 4:10's. the almost 400 hp is one of the things that drew me to the Ram and I expect to feel a significant difference but this gear ratio is just to restricting for my liking. I appreciate the reply's and hope that someone out there has detailed information on what this swap will take. I would consider the 4:10's but the 3:92's are offered on this truck so in the theme of possibly retaining my warranty and ease of swapping I feel the 3:92's are the best choice for my situation. Again, thanks for the reply's.

Dodge put 4.10s in the R/Ts or the Express, can't remember what they called it.....

I now have Chrysler 4.10s in the back of my truck. If it's the same amount of work and money, I'd definitely go 4.10.

I have the RJ warranty plan. It's called "Money in the Bank".

I used to have 8 Speed Envy. Not any more.

I dunno why people get all annoyed by the 3.21. My dads new Ram has the 3.21 and its still plenty powerful. That HEMI moves the truck.

The R/T. The problem is that was a 2wd only model, I don't believe they made a 4x4 with 4.10's.

only the HD 2500/3500 have a 4.10 front option,
and those are 9.25" SFA not an 8" IFS

I wouldn't get so hung up on 4.10's,
they are barely lower than the readily available 3.92's

...at 60mph you may only see 100 rpm difference.

Go drive the same truck with 3.92's, and then get back to us. The Hemi motor is strong, but a truck with 3.92 gears will easily walk away from a truck with 3.21's. 3.21's were designed for gas mileage...3.92's are better suited for towing power and performance.

Depends on the transmission... if both are 8spds and the 3.21s could leave the 3.92 spinning its wheels LOL.

The front ring gear is welded to the diff case on the 1500's.

I was actually told by a service manager that the 4x4 2014's ring is not welded to the carrier.....I know I know, the dealers usually don't know ****. he swore up and down that 2012 and 2013 were the only years they welded them. Somebody with a 2014 needs to pop open the front diff and snap some pictures.

4.10s were readily available when I wanted them. All I had to do is call Matt!

Sorry I'm so hung up on my 4.10s. Everything should work as well. I wouldn't have been as happy with 3.92s.

Final gearing... Either you get it or you don't. There was a guy that was running 37" tires with the 3.55s, and I assume a 5/6 speed. I'd have been miserable with that mess, but he seemed ok with it.
