Well guys been searching for the past couple of weeks on some deals for trucks and quite possible when I get home might get me a 2014 Ram 1500 Lone Star edition. It's always been my idea to wait out as long as possible to get the best deal possible.

So hopefully I will be able to inform y'all of my purchase soon. I'm a sucker for Dodge blue so trying to get that one just trying to wait and see what kind of deal they can work for me.

So can someone tell me the tow capacity on the 1500 with the 3.55 gears I believe it is. I'm considering upgrading to the 3.92 but its something I'll have to do myself due to the dealerships I've spoke to said it will void the warranty even if they do it plus it's a liability issue as well.

Dealerships will say whatever they can to sell what's on the lot. Ram offers either one of those gear selections from the factory. They aren't going to void a warranty to sell you a truck with their factory gears.

I think you're crazy though, that pic with your name is a beautiful truck! I mean, I went from a regular cab to a crew cab, but my biggest regret is not going to the 2500.

You're getting a 6 speed then? Just wait and get what you want. The gears are a $50 dollar option and a $1500-$2000 job to have it done. I also recommend the 8 speed.

Depending on 2wd vs 4wd if it's the 5.7l you will be high 8000s 8650-8950 ish

Yeah it is a 2wd looking at the 5.7 hemi.

Well I asked if they would change the gears and they said it would void the warranty due to it wasn't the factory equipment. I am trying to see if they have any trucks with the 3.92 in it though.

Well I recently test drove the 2500 it's a hell of a truck I won't lie but for my current situation it really is overkill. I just need a truck to pull my travel trailer and I only pull it say 1 time a month at most. But for now I won't be pulling it again till sometime in March.

The truck is actually the new 8 speed that they have.

Okay thank you for that because I've seen 8,150-8,900 so idk if the dealership was just in a hurry and didn't put it but I need to have a good idea of towing capacity cause I figure my trailer fully loaded is between 7500-8000lbs.

If your trailer is 8k loaded you should be careful with the tounge weight. The 1500's run out of payload very quick. What's the tounge weight of your trailer?

My crew cab 5.7 w/8 speed claims slightly over 10k lbs. Not sure how true it is though, I don't usually tow.

Yeah, I can't chance it. I need to know for sure. I know the only way to have the 10,500 tow is with 3.92 which most dealerships don't have. So it almost has to be special ordered.

I might just have to bite the bullet and go 2500 with a good ole Cummins motor.

900 dry is a ton for a 1/2 you might have to step up to the 2500. The payload on the 1500 cc 2wd is 1600lbs - 900 is 700lbs - 80 ish for WD hitch 620 now you have to load up the trailer load your family and any supplys. It will be extremely tight for a 1500, if it was just you and you loaded everything in the rear of the trailer you probably would be fine. The weight of the trailer will be no issue for the power of the hemi, you just won't have enough truck for the hitch weight.

Just a heads up, the 6 cylinder diesel is basically the engine from the Sprinter. It's a nice work horse and tows 9200 lbs

Yes very true, last thing I want to do is overdue a truck. I was considering the 2500 initially but the price tag is rather hard to swallow as y'all know I'm sure.

Yeah I know with the 2500 its built to be a work horse, I test drove one on Saturday and I was definitely impressed by it.

I always dreamed of owning a Cummins so, I guess this is my time to buy it. After saving for it because I will have to do it.

Just so you've got an idea what it will look like, here's 900lb pin weight on my 2014. Granted I'm lifted with only 1" of rake instead of the factory 2". I'm also not using a weight distribution hitch in the pic. I am however using the air lift 1000 bags maxed out.

Not sure what went wrong with the pics in the last post. Here are before and after air lift 1000 pics

My father has a 2014 with the 3.21. His travel trailer is a 31 footer and around 7,000 lb. (not sure of the tongue weight). And he loads it with wood and other things at times in combination with the camper. So I know he's pushing the bounds of what it's rated for.

He has says it handles and acts just fine. He also loads it up heavy for work purposes.

My 2015 should be here soon. I got the 3.92 even though I hardly pull a camper. Mostly for kicks.

Maybe that will give you some reference. I can't give you first hand experience. But that's what I know. I believe he replaced the stock bumpers in it and put timbrens.

Thanks for all the advice, my biggest thing I don't want to overload the truck and really mess up something.

I think my safest bet will be just to go 2500 due to the extra towing and other benefits.

When I was buying in October a 2500 with hemi was about the same price as the 1500s, even more so the 2500s with the 5.7 may have even been cheaper. Now the diesel 2500s pull a premium price. I was kind of in the same situation as you, I tow my camper in the summer about 8 times max a year. It weighs 5700 unloaded and I pull a small trailer with dirt bike, 4 wheeler and generator on it behind the travel trailer (legal here) total weight is probably around 8000. I will see how it does in a few months. I found a truck with the air ride option so should be good to go on sag. Will see how the half ton frame can handle the load. Coming from an 01 f250. Couldn't justify all the extra costs that come with a diesel towing so little per year. If you towed heavy daily it's a no brainer.

my truck is a CC 5.7 with the 8spd and 3.92's and its 4x4 but if i recall i was looking at all the towing specs on the RAM website and i believe as stated it can tow 10k+ but payload is only 1600lbs.

Yeah I agree, I like the idea of getting the 1500 but I think its going to have to be the 2500 as I do plan to upgrade my travel trailer here in a couple years and rather have a 2500 for now than have to take a hit trading in a 1500. To me it just makes more sense.
