Looking at trading my Tacoma in and getting a 2015 5.7L hemi 2500. Has 40k miles and owner says he has full maintenance records and that it’s been well taken care of.

Anything I should watch out for? Or if this year/motor is not known for being very solid, please let me know because there are newer ones I’m also considering but I can pick this one for around $29k

Reason for wanting for a gas 2500:
1. when towing 6-10k lbs, I don’t want to feel like I’m being pushed around by the trailer like I have before when towing with a half ton (Chevy 5.3 and Ford ecoboost)
2. Don’t want to pay for a diesel lol

The 5.7 has been around for a long time. There are some who have issues with lifters, but gm has the same issues. Just make sure it is quiet (ie no hemi tick) and if you want to use it for towing, I would pay attention to gear ratio. If it doesn't have a 4.10, I would budget for a gear swap in the future. It should serve you well at those weights and will be so much more relaxing towing.

Thanks for the info! I checked the online build sheet and it has the 3.73 gears. What are you guys seeing for front and rear a gear change cost?

I had front and rear done for $2100 out here in California, so It depends on the area.

3.73s are a good middle of the road gearing for towing and you might be content with it. I am just the type where I try and find the best compromise for towing and driving. That has caused me to regear my last 3 trucks.

The 5.7 will get your towing job done, but I would be looking for a 6.4 hemi in a 2500.

That’s the other motor I’m looking at. Is there a noticeable difference between the two? And how is resale between the two?

I have a 15 ram 2500.. expect to do lifters and rollers if you buy a hemi, if you don't end up doing it great!

I have the 6.4 and 5.7 both are solid and close to the same motor mechanically speaking.

All trucks have issues.

Only HD trucks I have had had the 5.9 Cummins. The 6.4 has a little more power. Might want ask this in HD section. When I buy used vehicles, I always let a machanic go over it.
