I am new here and Ive had my 2016 ram 2500 6.7 auto truck in twice for a oil temp issue. Each time they say they can't find anything wrong. But if im not towing the temps after about a ten mile trip go from 205 and drop down to 165 then start climbing back up only to drop back down to 165. I noticed if im on the freeway then go thru city traffic they seem to drop really fast but then go up to like 205 then back down to 165. The engine temp will be 197-203 the whole time. If im towing the temps are any where from 245-165 just keep going up and dropping back down. They did some update this last time,tsb18-015-17 but it hasn't done anything different. Does everybody else truck do this or what do you think could be the problem?

I am an old-school guy, so much of this computer control is over my head.....but that sure sounds like a failed sensor. Its difficult to imagine a real-world scenario where oil temp would change like that. How difficult is it to swap out the sensor/

Either a failed or failing sensor or does you're oil cooler have a thermostat? I'm not sure about the thermostat for you're oil cooler, you may or may not have one.

I took it in last week and the dodge dealer told me "we could not duplicate the problem". But when I drive it 10 or miles it does it. Funny thing is they put three miles on it so how do you find a issue with only putting three miles on it. I called and talk to the ram complaint line and they ask me to take it to a different dealer that they will work with, but they told me that same thing the last time, so well see. I am so not happy with this truck or ram themselves. But after driving it for a week and a hundred miles it still does it.

Engine temp? You mean oil temp? or water temp? Have you followed both water and oil temps? Have you shot the oil pan with a thermo gun?

So that would not be a correct oil temp imo, my bet your sensor is off or worse your puter is fritzing. I would just watch water temps from now on, disregard the oil temps. When was pcv changed last, how many miles on truck? Have you changed the oil, I would use a heavy detergent oil like PUP for sure.

I would never disregard oil temp fluctuation, especially in a diesel. There is definitely a problem there, whether it be electrical or mechanical, i.e., a clot/something in the oil cooling circuit that alternates between full flow/restriction. I'd consider making a video of it while it is happening to show the dealer and/or take it to another dealer. What oil are you using? I don't think Burla realizes you have a diesel. PUP is not for diesels.

May be a long shot but any update to what ever came from this? 2016 recently stared doing this.
