So I'm the owner of my truck for about 2 months now. It came with the 6 speaker non-Alpine system. The first thing I did was swap out the 6X9s that I picked up at Be$t Buy. I knew I next needed a subwoofer. Now, I came from a 2012 FX4 that I installed the powered Kicker setup that is offered so I wanted that 'thump' back.
So, before I even knew this WONDERFUL forum existed, I did a simple eBay search for "2016 Ram subwoofer" and found second-hand factory enclosures with the Alpine sub for around $130 shipped. I asked the sellers questioned if this would work if the truck didnt come with it. I looked under the seat and sure as Sue, there was a plug behind the carpet in the cargo area. The seller told me that as long as the plug is there, it is just plug and play. As you all know, it didn't.
So now I have a sub enclosure with nothing to power it. Still unaware of this forum, I headed over to Amazon to look for an amp. Of course, I didn't want to break the bank and bought a Boss
RIOT 1100 Watts, Mosfet Monoblock Power Amp and hooked it up. Turned the gain way down and this POS kept going into protection mode. I read reviews from other sites than amazon and again, I got a big pile of garbage. Off it went back to the warehouse.
So off to Be$t Buy I went and got an Alpine MRV M-500 Amp and swapped that out.
This was a well built amp and no complaints. I just didn't like the sound of this Alpine stock sub, so off to the Googles to find another sub, and this is where I finally found this forum. And thank goodness I did.
I read up on the Pioneer 8" sub that has been swapped in and reports were that it was a simple swap out and a definite improvement over the stock.
Welp. This is where finding this forum sooner would have helped me even more. I fried the living crap out of this thing within 2 weeks of having it. Its a DVC and not knowing anything, I didn't wire them correctly. And I knew that an 8" sub was just not going to work for me. And the ones where it was, it was the factory sub powering it for guys that had the Alpine system.
So here I was again with a bassless system and a lighter wallet. I read about wiring, different enclosures, ohms, chosen subwoofers and everything I needed to know about from all of you. The overwhelming choice from the forum was to get a Fox Box. As great as they where, financially (right after Christmas) this was not going to be an option. I ended up getting the QBox off of Amazon. Just a single 12" enclosure for under the passenger rear seat. It arrived and fit very well and appeared to be well made.
I read all the threads on subs and concluded that an Alpine Type S was going to be the best choice for me. I found last year's model on Amazon for only $74 and pulled the trigger on the Alpine SWS-12D4 12" Dual-Voice-Coil 4-Ohm Subwoofer SWS12D4. Wired it for 2 Ohms and got it all installed.
The sound out of this thing is AWESOME. This is perfect for what I need in this truck. I want to thank every one of you out there that take time to answer questions, post results of what you have done, and all of the great advise given out. Without it, people like me would still be standing around scratching or heads.
