I have read that the 2019 2500 and 3500 trucks, while saddled with the new front end, was still a Gen 4 underneath. The full change appears to have occurred in the 2020 model year.

They are, and people have actually put the front end of a 2019 2500 onto a 4th gen before. I could imagine with extensive time and a deep savings account you could retrofit a 5th gen interior into a 4th gen.

The HeftyDuty is completely new except the cab and bed. And the overall seat pattern although the entire interior was made to mimick the 5th Gen 1500

The frame is completely updated and the obvious 5thgen styling pieces

The main reason the classic happened is the regular cab and 8 foot bed. They have not made a new regular cab or 8 foot bed yet.

The secondary reason is that RAM was going directly at laramie and limited owners who had to have the newest truck. They were attempting to raise the average selling price in a competitive market. They kept the classic as the cheap alternative.

So far it looks like the classic is on track to be a 2022 model as well

I specifically went with the “classic” 4th Gen when I got my new 2019. It’s a proven model and I was able to transfer all the accessories from my 2014. Also easier/cheaper to find parts for than the new 5th Gen.

No Dodge didn't make a 4th Ave 5th gen in 2019. Ram did however make a 2019 in a 4th and 5th gen, and they still continue to do so.

Well now, if you want to get technical on the Dodge/Ram moniker, I don't think
Ram was around for the Dodge l - 2 and maybe even 3 gen Dodge manufacture of the Dodge pickups Ram models. So, a Ram lst gen would be the year Dodge split
the Dodge pickup line to an independent which would be that Ram has yet to build a 4th and 5th gen Ram pickup/truck. Then again, I understood the OP original question, but then again I'm a bit older.......with a fairly sound memory (I think)..
But, could also be different in the Great White North.......

There is an all new 5th gen regular cab Ram 2500. Just not 1500, the regular cab 1500 is still a classic 4th gen. The 1500 classic RC is made in mexico. The 1500 classic CC and QC are made in the states.
As far as reasoning to keep the classic, according to Ram press releases, is for fleet customers and police, fire, ext.. and yes a less expensive alternative. The all new Ram fetches more coin because of the two choices on the lot.
However, as far as reliability. The classic is winning by a long shot. The all new Ram is a lemon and I know first hand. I went from a 2019 all new Ram back to a 2020 Classic. I love the new looks of the 5th gen, but needed a reliable truck for my business. Oh well, Ram broke my heart :( happy with my Classic though :)

Think it's up to 22 recalls now, but who's counting?

This is the same cab as the classic 1500 regular cab uses.

This is why a many people call the 2019 and up HeavyDuty a 4.5 Gen

Regular, crew and mega are still 4th Gen cabs. The frame and front end has been updated. And talgaite.

I think that is pretty common with any first year version of a vehicle. Gotta' work the bugs out.

I think Ram went with the 5th gen simply to keep up with the competition. Ford, Chevy, GMC, Nissan... all have gone to big, behemoth trucks with huge, ugly, overly-complicated grilles. The 5thGen Rams are following suite. However, they know they have a huge fanbase that prefers the traditional forward leaning, cross-hairs grille and sleek lines. It's iconic. You can spot a Ram from a mile away. Keeping the "Classic" line going is a pretty shrewd business decision. Keeps everyone happy.

DCA/Dodge officially spun off “RAM” as a separate brand in 2012, but it didn’t Siena tusk effect until the 2013 model year for badging and dealership branding.

It took a few more years before pets suppliers began recognizing the separate brand.
