Just a bit of a rant, here...

My new-to-me 2020 Laramie (just bought in March) had only 49k when I bought it. At the time, I noticed the front-end seemed a little loose but the price was right and I do most of my own work so I wasn't too concerned about it. Drove it for a few months before I decided it needed to be looked at and she's still under aftermarket warranty so I took it to the dealer to have it looked at (why do the work myself when it's supposed to be fully covered, right? ). Turns out, the axle splines are completely worn inside the front differential inputs. When the tech showed me, I was shocked to see the level of wear on a truck that, when I first noticed the issue, had less than 50,000 miles. My 2012 has 186,000 miles and the front axles are still as tight as (insert imaginative comparison here)!

Anyways, in my continuing run of difficulties with aftermarket warranties (see my recent thread re: my 2012 engine replacement), the "bumper to bumper" aftermarket warranty I purchased with the truck will not actually cover the full repair cost of $5100 (dealership cost). In essence, they want my on-paper deductible of $100 to actually be a little over $1,000. When I asked what would happen if I brought it to another shop - like maybe not a dealer - they said they would have to do a whole new coverage analysis based on that shop's rates and that, even if the new shop's total cost is less than what they offered the dealership for coverage, they may still not cover the total cost at the new shop! Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?!

I'm still going to fight the good fight on this one because the paperwork I got from the warranty purchase made it very clear what the level of coverage was and there is no little fine print saying anything like what they've been telling me. The first time I called them, the guy literally said to me after I explained the claim "Yep! That's fully covered." Then they sent their adjuster out and completely changed their tune. Ugh.

Okay, rant over. Anyone else had any issues with premature axle wear on this generation Ram?

Someone left it in 4 WD all the time? What were the signs that there was an issue? Since I really never use the 4WD, I cant imagine what would do this type of damage.

Sounds like they're trying to sell you a complete new diff.My local dealer was stocking these guys kits awhile ago,i haven't asked lately if they're still stocking them, since they changed owners. They were replacing the stub shafts, instead of the whole diff,if you were paying out of pocket. I think warrenty claims were differant, and then they replaced the whole diff.

I'm guessing you seen your axles, the only thing that surprises me is that they last for 80k miles which is their "average" lifespan. They are chinsy, I had a boot blow somewhere around 25k miles, forgot to be honest. Sometimes they will last 150k miles, but since the average is 80k miles it means guys like me and you win the Darwin axle lottery. Moving to a 2500 gives you that nice solid axle. Those last a lifetime and can be sold when the rest of the truck has died.
