I didn't have that problem with my Ram trucks but my Jeep Gladiator just seems susceptible to such dings.

I added glass coverage to my insurance and don't pay for repair or replacement on that rig anymore.
My 2014, got nailed ,and broke ,but it was 9 years old before I replaced it ,but no chips out of it .

Maybe don't follow so close, usually tailgating is the biggest issue in regards to stone chips or sandblasted/pitted windshields
Closer the better if thats what you are trying to prevent , I have gotten it following at a save distance as far as safety goes , gives that rock time to get good ,and airborne to nail the windshield , or if lucky just gets the paint real good just above the windshild :p Either stay way back , or tailgate to the point where you can't see the rear tires, keep that rock from getting airborne . Then you can use your collision insurance for a complete repair if you ,and the vehicle survive enough for repair. :happy175:

In all seriousness, sometimes that rock just stays in the air just long enough regardless of what you are doing . I've gotten it on a road thats been chipped , and had the rocks get me from a vehicle coming from the opposite direction going too fast on the repaired road . , two lane road that is . Or passing me on a repaired road when they shouldn't have .

The OP states he's getting a rock chip repaired every other month, your theory works, but i'm not sure it'd apply to as many rock chips as he's getting in Kansas,if he wasn't following a bit to close at times.
Hell i live where they basically gravel the highways 6 months out of the year,in Alberta, and my 14 still had it's original windshield, and it was still in pretty decent shape, with only having one chip that i'd had repaired a few years ago, when i sold the truck a few months ago

I really don't follow that close. These are mostly from cattle and grain trucks throwing rocks which then take off bouncing. Or rocks thrown from vehicles going the opposite direction on two lane roads.

Y'all have answered my question. Thanks.

I kind of wonder if the quality of windshields hasn't went down a bit.Mopar is famous for grinding their suppliers, and switching to the lowest bidder,so there might be quality issues now, more then say what my 14 had.

Having commuted to work (60 miles each way) for 30 years on interstate 80, I can say for sure, stay the heck back from trucks, especially those with crappy or missing mud flaps. All of the hits I took to any of the several vehicles I drove, mainly Ford Rangers, were from large trucks and truck trailers.

Also mine is a 2014 , made it nine years , got it from a semi on I-15 in Utah , at a very safe distance I saw the rock coming . I will not stay behind a semi ,no matter what now . I'm over ,and passing or I am so far back I can't get it . Don't want anything to do with being around a semi for lots of reasons ,rocks ,or whatever , or a tire coming apart . If I can't get around a semi quickly , I stay away .

My replacement on my 2014 ,I insisted on OE, IMO it's as good a glass as my original so far in the two years since replacement .

Had to replace the wife's car ,it's aftermarket , and so far it's been fine .

Rock chip repair as a claim , just raises insurance cost for everyone imo. My 04 is on its 2nd windshield . Right at 424-425k miles. The current one has 12 chips or so, one from a lug-nut I saw coming couldn’t get out of the way. Had another lug-nut hit the roof just above the windshield . Nice lil dent now. My buddy had a 2x4 come though the pass side windshield , while he was on the phone. The guy on the phone didn’t believe him till he pulled up at the guys house 20min later. We both do a lot of frwy driving. Windshields are safety glass , so I only change em when a crack starts glaring the sun in my eyes or if I was going to sell. Most chips are an easy fix nowadays. You can’t believe how inexpensive windshields actually are. The glass shop I use charges 120 for my obs C1500 & the same for my 04 ram. Thats for new & they offer used as well. The chip repair guy I asked to fix 2 chips wanted my ins info & 50bucks , I went and had it replaced for 100 at the time. 2016-17. Last year they said 120 for my ram. Maybe look around for a glass shop that offers new & used windshield replacement before getting a chip repaired . Jmo

My 14 is flawless, no chip or rock pecks. My 16 prior to it being sold was pecked all over but never broken. Just looked like i had drove through a sand storm.

My 22 jeep wrangler, no pecks but wife drives it so, I never expect one.

My 24 ram, caught a rock in the hood stripe but not windshield. Fixing the hood stripe is a major pain.

I have a 2021 Ram Limited crew cab with a crack in the windshield. I called 2 glass companies and both said that its $500 to replace then another $550 to calibrate it. Do I really need to have it calibrated?

Is that $500 your deductible or the actual cost of the new replacement windshield?

What sensors, etc. do you have as part of your windshield currently?
Calibration may be required in some instances.

our windshields have to get replaced every single year.they gravel the roads constantly up here during the winter.no matter how much space you leave you still get a trashed windshield, mostly from drivers coming from the opposite direction, and everyone here drives trucks.i put my rocktamers on in the fall as a courtesy to others.that's how bad it is.I already have 2 chips from my summer travelling and it's only a year old.

I’ve had 3 replacement windshields. Never needed a recalibration. I was told by my glass guy to keep the FOB away from the vehicle while they’re replacing the glass. Had them all replaced in my driveway. Kept the FOB in the house.

I cant put my finger on it but glass is not what it used to be, I don't like the wife's 2025 Toyota glass compared to her 2010 glass same manu. Mor research needed, if I find anything I will update.

Back when I was detailing, we had a lady with a BMW that lived on a heavy gravel road, her windshield and hood took a beating like we never seen before. I don't know how it worked out at the time we didn't offer this service, but there is a windshield protection film you put on the outside of windshield. That is not for ram I'm sure they have one. Because I didn't follow up with her and never saw the car again, I do not know how it worked out but she said she was getting it. I probably lost her as a customer because my guess who ever offered it probably was another detailer, lol.

Be careful with your following distance. Avoid trailing heavy trucks and machinery.
The faster you are traveling the more important this becomes.
I do not follow heavy equipment. I rarely get rock dings.
Sometimes a warm day after a snow fall will crack windshields, so I clear them off early.
I had a Ford F-350 for 20 years. I replaced the windshield once due to frost cracks.

Maybe they have improved the windshield films in recent years. I remember watching a similar video several years ago by a high end wrap/PPF shop that did windshields and they concluded a year was about the extent of life for a windshield film and even then they had to remove most of it by razor blading it off as it would not hold together to pull off.
