Hey guys, while I wait for my new truck I am reading everything I can. I'm moving from my current
15 GMC HD 1500 to a Laramie Crew 2500 4x4. I tow an 8000lb travel trailer.

1). I'm reading the tires are crap on these so I am looking for a replacement where I could get some decent money out of the Firestone's. Any personal experience recommendations for an all terrain tire that might set the truck up about 1"?

2) My truck was ordered with tire pressure monitoring for a trailer. I saw a vid where a Silverado owner said his truck came with sensors.....does Ram come with those? Any advice on where and what I need to purchase to install on my camper?

3) Finally, I'm been looking at leveling options and considering the Thuren front coil springs and Thuren tuned fox shocks...do I get the 1.5 or 2"?

Thanks for you help!

1) Go to Discount Tire, I got about $500 out of the stock tires with about 2500 miles on them.

For tires you should look at LT295/70R18 IT IS A 34x12 tire and fits the stock suspension with out any issues. That will give you the 1” or so you are looking for

2) It is my understanding that you get 4 sensors with that option.

3) if you are towing a trailer I would add airbags then the leveling kit. Even with a W/D hitch the springs in the back will compress a lot. So with a leveling kit and nothing to help get you back to level your front end will be very light.

I would argue your leaf springs in the back of your 1500 HD do better with load than the coils on the Ram.

Very good stuff and super stout.

I've towed 8800 lbs. with another 1800 in the bed for 78k miles and never had over a two inch compression in the rear suspension. Very stable with just enough tongue weight. Hope my 2021 handles the same way.

The coils on the rear of my 2500 have been great- the 1500's not so much.

Oh I agree that the coils are stout. I’m just stating that if he lifts the front end the sag in the bag will be more pronounced than if he left it with stock rake.

My truck does very well with my 1400# tongue weight and a bunch of stuff in the bed.

So Discount Tire will buy your old tires?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Yep, as long as they are in good shape.

They don’t necessarily buy them, they prorate them based on mileage and appearance and give you money off a new purchase.

Congratulations on the purchase. Can't say negative about the stock tires on mine, they ride nice and do well in all weather. For trailering, I have towed different weight trailers and the WDH has been fine when needed and/or used. I had a 2003 2500 before my current 2500 and I have towed many 10s of thousands of miles with campers, bobcats, etc. and never been in need of bags. Not arguing with those that use them, I just like simple with less to fix and offering that as food for thought. Good luck.

Congratulations on your purchase! I have a similar vehicle in Tradesman trim and contemplated the Thuren springs as well. After speaking with them I found their springs are more dynamic than the factory springs and would not be advisable for my towing use case. In all fairness, I have a fifth wheel setup and bumper pull may have a different result.

In any event, the suspension rake (lower front than rear) is intended to level out the truck when towing. Leveling the front will result in an upward rake of the front when towing which could potentially compromise your steering ability.

Call them and talk with them about your intentions, use case and scenarios. They will just as quickly talk you out of something if it's not right for your application.

I swapped out to the Terra Grappler G2's in 295/70/18 and couldn't be happier!

Sold my stock tires for $400

Leveling and towing is not a good combo

When I got mine new, I drove directly from the dealership to Belle Tire and only paid like $300 to upgrade to KO2’s. If under 100 miles, they pay top dollar. None of the Discount Tire shops in my area would buy the used tires, they said they stopped doing this....call ahead and ask around

If you are towing a travel trailer I would not put a level kit on it. Put the bigger tires on it and see if you like the look. They will fill the wheel well better. I suspect you will like it just fine. Truck has a rake to compensate for the weight of a trailer. What is the point in spending more money for airbags if you don't have to. Let the truck do what it was designed to do. Just my 2cents which isn't worth much these days.

in all my years of doing business with discount tires theyNEVER offered any money or trade in value for tires that were on your truck even as brand new with even less than five hundred miles as those tires are considered used and discount doesnt sell used tires

They sell used tires in my area. You need to ask them what they would give for your used ones when purchasing new.

I’ve had them “buy”(give me a rebate on the last 3 vehicles I’ve had new tires put on. And my Dad has had them do it on 4 of his.

It goes back to that, you don’t get what you don’t ask for.

Discount does in fact sell used tires if they meet certain criteria, and factory rubber of HD trucks is a hot commodity, because business will buy used like new tires in a heartbeat over brand new.

totally depends on location. I have asked a Discount tires in Boise Id and they said nope not interested in taking take offs on trade no matter if just driven from the dealership straight to DT, the DT in Kalispell said they might do $50 a tire if were really low miles and One in Spokane Wa said no they will not take tires in on trade even if no or low miles. Locally here Les Schwabb will take low mile take offs but they charge a premium for new tires so better off selling yourself. I have had TireRama give me a decent price of low mile tires that I bought from them to begin with when trading up in size. I think sometimes mom and pop stores might be more willing to give you a few dollars on trade vs DT but again every place is different.

I have a 1500 with the Falken Wildpeak AT tires and they have been great on the highway..have put many miles on them in the snow and on mountain roads..all good. pulled my travel trailer a couple hours in driving rain storm and they felt sure footed. I would imagine that they are available in sizes for the 2500.

Weird the one in Boise is the one that did it for me twice. I got $600 back both times.
