So I’ve gotten a wild hair and curious if anyone else has done something similar. I have my old ‘97 ram 1500 139” 4wd and I’m thinking about taking a 2400ish mile road trip from lower Idaho to Oklahoma. Trucks got about 138k on it now and has had the brake redone on it, about to get the steering redone and has some pretty new tires. Anyone think I’ll make it or think I should try another route and get a rental or something

You "know" it better than any of us ever will, just depends on how much you trust it.

My 93 Sierra has 185k miles, been totaled twice, boiled the coolant, run dry on oil, has a squealing water pump, etc etc etc. All that said, I've been driving it for 10 years and know all the ins and outs of it, I would have no problem taking it on a long trip. Of all the things I could see going wrong with it, a wrench set, pliers, screw driver, 10ft of copper wire, and a couple gallons of coolant could fix 95% of them, and I can easily fit all of those in the tool box. (I actually do most of the time, limped it a few times but always made it home.)

As far as I'm concerned, 100k miles is just getting warmed up and '97 really isn't that old, you see older than that on the road every day. If you have known issues that have you on your toes already then it may not be worth the risk but your year and milage alone wouldn't concern me at all.

If you only knew...LOL!

I had a 2004 Chevy Avalanche that I BEAT TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH. It was my toy. I drove it through giagantic mud holes, through 1ft.+ deep salt water too many times to count, and hauled and towed ridiculosly overweight loads. I lent it out as a free rental car to my family and friends when they needed heavy work, and did so many burn outs and donuts I can't count them. You get the idea.

I took it on 2000+ mile trips several times just to keep wear and tear off my good vehicles. Bonus was, I never worried about it for a second. BTW, it had 250K when I got rid of it. You will be fine!

My 98 Ram 2500 has been on several cross country trips with no issues. It's proven to be the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned with very little maintenance required beyond tires and brakes. It even has its original clutch with plenty of life left in it in spite of its two hundred thousand plus millage.

Yeah, it should make the trip just fine. With the miles that low and the recent work you’ve done, that truck is more than capable of a 2400-mile run. If it’s running well now, you’re good to go.

I remember that my brother and I watched Superman on TV as small children. (Circa 1959-1960?)
At such tender ages (we are 1 year apart/ him being the older), we had the proclivity to believe that we, too, could fly if only we had capes.
So, as being tiny tots, we found 2 of our Mom's nicest and largest bath towels.... fastened them on, went up on the roof of the house, and commenced to dare each other to be the first to try to fly, by jumping off the apex of the house.
Fortunately, a lizard brained self preservation ideal came over us, and we climbed down off the roof.

It might have "seemed" feasible that we, too, could fly with capes; after all, Clark Kent di it.

Pax Vobiscum! :)

Yeah, but at almost 71 Y/O, I fear receding to that early childhood and either getting up on the roof in a loin cloth, pounding my chest, and yodeling like Tarzan, then swinging on a vine; or donning a cape and really taking that leap! ;)

Just sold my '79 Scottsdale C 20 to a friend. A year or so after I first owned it 2006 or 2007, I took it on a 1200 mile jaunt across and around Western Montana. No problems at all, it did take a while since I didn't realize the speedometer was running slow. Depends on how much you trust it. Until the last couple of years I took it all sorts of places where walking out would have been a problem. Once you don't trust it. there is likely a reason or the truck "knows".

About 5 years ago, I drove my 1996 v10 from here to Texas and back. Total about 10,000 miles with all the touring we did. Not even a single glitch, except I had to stop and air down the Duratracs from 95 pounds back to 50. Left here at -45, it was over 90 when we hit Arizona, amazing how basket ballish tires are at 95 Lbs.

That PU has 165,000 miles on it, runs like it did when I bought it new. Still burns zero oil between 10,000 mile oil changes and has never had more than regular maintenance. Take care of them, they will run for a very long time..
