so that 3 foot muffler under the bed is rusted out
ive seen about a dozen posts on here that claim "any 6.4 system will work with an adapter" but no mention about the size or location of said adapter

SO: what needs to be done to make a 6.4 exhaust fit on a 5.7 2500 ?

its the big honker i want to replace and i do not need to sound like a dragster

best i can tell it is a 3 inch in, 3 inch out (single exhaust) muffler with female ends
26 inch body, 9 inch pipe facing the cab, 4 inch facing the axle

or if anyone has a 6.4 they want to measure maybe i can put this to bed

I have one sitting at home from when I put a Borla cat back system on my truck. If no one gets back to you by tomorrow night, I'll measure it and let you know (currently away from home pulling dredges out of lakes across the state). You wouldn't happen to need one, would you (6.4 muffler - not a dredge :p)?

Lol! Here's what I have. It has 3 1/2" in/out pipes and its approx. 7 1/2" deep. Other measurements are on the pic.

thanks for checking that for me, that clears a few things up

if i measured mine correctly, the main body is 26 inches and the in/out pipes are 3 inches (one of them is 2 inches shorter, so overal length it might fit)

i think thats enough of a difference to make it a royal pain to install yours, and it would require some cutting to get two 3.5-3 inch reducers on both ends to make it fit with the existing tubing

it might be an option though

Maybe a dumb question but what is the point of going to the 6.4 muffler? Do they not make the 5.7 mufflers anymore for the 2500's?

I certainly wouldn't enjoy trying to make it fit :emotions122:

Stock they might still make em, at $500 a pop...they are Mighty proud of those mufflers

So, when I started looking for options there a lot of threads on here that said 'you can use the 6.4 system with an adapter'

But, no one mentioned any specifics about what this adapter looks like, or where it would go

Having seen Dredgers pic, I think a simple 3-3.5 reducer installed where my stock muffler would go, and then a 6.4 system from there would do the trick

That opens up options

One thing to consider and I am not sure if its a problem or not....the 6.4 muffler has a flap in it for when its in 4 cyl MDS mode, that flap opens I believe from added flow of when its running on all 8. Not sure if that poses a problem, most likely not but just wanted to make you aware.

Gotcha. What about an aftermarket stock replacement muffler? Rockauto has a walker brand one for $170 for the 5.7. Still seems expensive to me but what isn't now. A straight pipe and pair of ear muffs would be a cheap option lol. Just kidding.

Not sure on how many pieces your exhaust system is but if the piece before the muffler can be taken off easily you could do that and bring it to a muffler shop with the 6.4 muffler and have them enlargen the end of the piece before the muffler so you could mate them up without an adapter. Only takes them a minute to do and if they're slow that day you might get lucky and get it done for free. I did that on a project car a few years ago rather then messing with adapters/reducers.

If that walker fits in game

I thought I checked rock auto and didn't see anything

I'm even OK with a shop putting an off the shelf muffler on

I don't want to be too loud, I plow with this truck and if possible id rather not sound like a dragster

Sounds easy enough. Just measure your oem mufflers. Then buy an aftermarket muffler that matches it. Plenty of aftermarket mufflers manufacturers to choose from.

It's the offset that makes it a bugger, and I don't think they let you search by dimensions

Its not like the old days where you could flip through a catalogue to find what you need

And you cant expect the kids behind the counter at AutoZone to do it anymore these days Iether

(On a side note, I walked into a Napa the other day and walked out with a voltage regulator for my 71 duster, right off the shelf, that was cool)

I’ve used Walker on many replacements and been completely satisfied with exhaust and catalytic converters
Walker always made the best sounding muffler for the mopar big blocks in the 60's thru 70's and early 80's. They were the gold standard for exhaust pipes and mufflers back then.

Sounded great on my 383, 426 and 440 cars.

I’m an OG and had similar thoughts like you. Installed a Magnaflow exhaust on my ‘06 2500 with 5.7. It is quiet during normal driving, no drone on the highway but sounds good when you stomp on the gas. Wife likes it too.

The Magnaflow muffler p/n on the receipt was 12578 but I’m not sure if it was the muffler shop’s code or Magnaflow’s.

That one looks a little shorter than stock, but definitely would be doable

I ordered the walker though, should be a drop in
$200 for a muffler seems excessive, but a local shop I contacted (the one who actually returned my call) wanted $476.50 for one...and another 175 to install it
