Not sure if anyone has researched this or not, but has anyone installed a 2500/3500 2wd Rack and pinion on a 1500 2wd? I am assuming they are beefier and better built than a 1500. Just not sure if it all bolts up the same or even if this is what I need to solve my problems. I am probably going to take it to a dealership and have them take a look at it to help me decide what all is wrong.

I believe they use the same racks. I searched for replacements and the 2500 and 1500 had the same part number.

I am not sure to what extent, but I was advised when I owned my 2007 1500 that the steering on the 2/3500 is different from the 1500. I 'blew up' my steering system in -40C weather when turning shortly after startup, and was talking to the shop foreman who said it's only the 1500's that have the issue. I haven't had a signal problem with the steering on my 3500 in cold weather...

So, all that rambling, I know there's differences between the steering system HD vs Non-HD, but what, I'm not mechanical enough to identify.

In the 2003 parts manual, 1500's and 2500/3500's have different part numbers. How different they actually are I dunno.

Ok, thanks for the info guys. I might try and see if O'Rileys has them in stock and if I can pull them down and look at them side by side.

Not even sure if this is where my problem is, hoping to take it to the dealership next week and let them test/look at/figure out my problem so I can take it home and fix it for cheap.

most of the front end components or different between the two. check out a lot of my pics in the DIYs and compare with your 1500. lots of differences. either way, good luck.

To OP, whats the original problem? I seem to have a leak in the rack on my truck. Is that what is going on?

I would like to know more on this issue too.

OK, I was just wondering. I have a slight leak and at times the steering has a hicup in it. Most often when it's cold right after start-up, similar to ^ post.

I have heard that dodge has a problem with the racks on their vehicles.

Thanks.

Same here, thats why I asked. I do have something all underneath the truck, but I am assuming its a leaky gasket somewhere. It gets dropped off at the dealership tomorrow. Im clinching my butt-hole now getting ready for the damage. But I just need to get it up and running. Ill be driving a lot more coming this fall. Work is going to be 25-30 minutes away compared to school being 1 minute away.

I just replaced my rack. Just went with oem part since the first one lasted 100K. Also went with moog ends and replaced a hub on rt side. Total was 750 for parts and labor from my local Midas guy. It was leaking and I didn't want it to blow. Also check your hoses cuz our clamps suck. Use worm clamps. Hope this helps
