2nd gen trans in 1st gen?

My dad and I just bought my grandfathers 90 cummins no inter cooler and 3speed auto we have a wrecked 98 that the cumimins was sold and still have a fresh rebuilt trans, what to know if we could put the new trans in because it has over drive

There is a problem about the PCM controller having to be adapted to the truck. I'm not sure how that would work out...

I cannot seem to locate a PCM for the tranmission, not sure if it has one

PCM is the little box on the passenger side of the firewall. This controls transmission, alternator, cruise control and a few other functions...
