i have a 02 4.7 ram that i’ve been having problems with recently and well this truck has been with me for around 10 years and i’ve always wanted to swap it. Around how much would a swap cost me.

if i were to buy a srt8 jeep cherokee as a donor would the swap fit?

1. Probably more than you want to spend
2. Engine yes. Trans no. AWD drivetrain no.

A 6.1 swap has always been difficult on these trucks, only a few have sank enough money in to actually get the SRT8 engines running in a 3rd gen. Even then, you'd be looking at swapping the transmission as well. Major wallet drainer lol

A 5.7 would PHYSICALLY fit but being an '02, not sure how well the electronics would go being that the hemi 5.7 was not offered in 2002, only the 360 magnum. I'm not sure of all the strange computer changes Dodge made in the early years of the 3rd gens, but you could "possibly" swap in an 03-05 PCM and wiring harness to put in a hemi, but like I said there's a lot of little changes that could make correctly wiring everything up a mess.

Look at this guy's thread. I know its a 3.7 swap, but the procedure is similar for the 4.7

I know the 5.9 had a different number if IT sensors, so that alone means you are probably also swapping the whole PCM system along with every sensor. I would think that it is cheaper to buy another 3rd gen and then use your good parts to build the other truck up, meaning swap body parts. That is much easier than swapping engines, transmissions, and electrical. Good luck.

A 6.1 is an easy physical bolt in. Hell, if you swap the stock 5.7 top end over all you need after is a custom tune to run it. People have been doing that for years. Keeping the 6.1 heads gets you port mismatch. If you leave the 6.1 bone stock, that's 420 lb-ft....stock eagle 5.7 is 409 ft-lb (not much less) and RFE's were behind those from 2009 to 2012. Once you start trying to hot rod one is where that trans is gonna go out the window lol. A problem I will be facing in the near future.
Newer Rams have it easy. Got a 5.7 hooked to an 8HP70? Sweet, grab that SRT 392 and straight drop it in because everything bolts and matches right up and all you need is tune, plus you don't have to worry about the trans blowing up on you. Lucky ******** lol.

Oh wow, from everything I’ve read it seemed a lot harder, but then again thats mostly from folks looking at a drag strip trucks. You learn something new everyday

While on the topic of engine swaps, I was thinking about how the ‘09 2500s come with the Eagle 5.7 hemis. Unless I’m missing something, getting your hand on an 09 HD hemi PCM and wire harness sounds like it would make an eagle swap pretty straightforward in the CAN-bus trucks (or at least as straightforward as engine swaps in these trucks go). Heck, a non-MDS eagle hemi would be a dreamy replacement to my good ‘ol V6, but lets be honest—just about ANYTHING would be a dreamy replacement to the 3.7 lol

I didn’t realize the 6.4 just dropped in for those guys either. Those 8 speed guys don’t understand the pain that the RFE puts on the 3rd gen guys have to go through to get any sort of serious performance gains lol

It would seem that easy, but from what I've read it's a weird hybrid of the two different CAN systems. Not sure how will it would work trying to make it work in an 06-08.
Beautiful thing about the ZF, it's a standalone when wired up correctly (TCM is integrated into the valve body). Retrofitted trucks are running around. Dude on HTC has a 2004 with a 6.1 based 392 and an 8HP70. The guy who came up with the harness that makes it possible keeps researching. Right now he's plugging away with a 2010 hemi, using it as a test mule to better retrofit the ZF in place of the RFE in those trucks at least. Pretty much any improvements made from that filters down the line. I've already started gathering parts.

If I had your truck I would swap it for a 4.7 (same family) then copy an unfinished build I saw years ago boosting the 4.7 with an Eaton blower from a Cobra Mustang (airram.com makes the necessary parts).

Ew, it couldn’t be simple could it? Lol if its has some weird hybrid 3rd gen/4th gen computer system that sounds like electrical gremlins galore. Doesn’t sound fun at all

If you’re talking about the guy from Sound German, I’ve been impressed with what he’s been doing, and am kinda looking forward to seeing a full kit to swap 8 speeds into older trucks. It would’ve been interesting to see how much better the 3.7 and 4.7 engines would’ve performed with more gears. The 3.7 would still be underpowered, but an 8 speed 4.7 would’ve been pretty enjoyable i bet lol

I’ve definitely given thought of what to replace the 3.7 with once it dies. The truck has a bit too much sentimental value to send to the salvage, and a 2wd RCSB isn’t a half bad starting point for some sort of performance piece. Of course I should probably make it through college and earn a living before I start dumping thousands of dollars into ANY sort performance rig lol

Yep, Russell. Right now he's trying to find a way to keep the stock column shifter to use with the ZF. A 2008+ 4.7 with an 8sp definitely would have been more interesting.

Probably a good idea lol.

If you have an RFE behind that 4.7 be prepared to shell out the cash for a better trans too.
