4x4not engaging 4Lo

My 2004 3500 diesel 4x4 auto will not engage 4LO. Will go in 4HI and back to 2nd but no 4LO. I have the switch on the dash. Any ideas?

Some of them are “picky” as to how and when they shift. My 2012 would only go into 4WD-Lo if I shifted the tranny into Neutral first…give it a few moments…and THEN it would shift.
Same thing backing out of 4WD-Lo also. It HAD to be in Neutral.

My present 2015 requires that the truck be slightly “rolling” in Neutral.

(Clearly, 4WD-Lo should be anticipated prior to needing it for these reasons.)

You might also check the electrical connector at the txfr-case motor.

You need to.provide way more detail before someone can help. Vehicle running, stopped or moving, speed if moving, transmission is in what gear, when is the last time you successfully put it into 4-lo, what are the lights on the transfer case switch doing during attempt, any CELs, stored error messages? Post that up and we may be able to assist.

This ^ Try starting the truck, putting it in neutral and then switching it into 4 low.

My last truck ,2010 I used it about 2 times, it went in OK, was a bit slow , getting it out was a pita. I had it rolling very slow, and put every thing into N and then 2wd H and it changed. I think it was just stuff from no use.
Now my current 2014 has never been is wd low. 8 sp.
Both had wd auto switch.

I put mine into 4 lo about once a month or two, just to make sure everything is working. I run mine on gravel for a few miles but keep the max speed under 30 mph. Even on dry pavement, as long as you are going straight, you can use it for short distances as long as you are gentle on the gas. Let it run through all 8 gears a few times to keep everything working.
