My current 2015 Eco Diesel 1500 has been one of the good ones for nearly 10 years and 112k miles. This truck is no quite up to the tasks I’m asking of it and I feel like I’m rolling the dice every time I head out of town. Towing 7k toy hauler in the mountains of the PNW with my family of 4 I’m over on payload and rear axle ratings.

I think it’s time for a 2500. While I have loved the 24mpg lifetime average, I’m done with diesel. Too much potential headache. Ideally I would love the upcoming Ram Charger to fit my needs but there hasn’t been enough information released to really know if it will. At this point I would like a heavier duty version of my tuck.

How reliable is the 6.4L? What would you consider too high of mileage to consider buying used? I’d like to find a 19 or 20 Laramie with around 50k miles on it for around $40k (which is still stupid money for a 5 year old truck)

What sort of reliability should I expect from a 50-70k mile engine? From reading it sounds like the 6.4 is less prone to develop the Hemi tick. Is it still common for these cams to go bad?

What else should I keep an eye out for?

Thanks

Only reason you don't hear as much about the cam/lifter issue in the 6.4's is because there's alot less of them on the road including the car/jeep 6.4's. They have the same issues as the 5.7's have. It's a roll of the dice/luck of the draw on whether you get a good Hemi or a bad Hemi, all you can do is keep up on maintence and use a good oil and filter combo, and Do Not baby the damn thing, that'll kill a cam faster then if you drive it like you stole it.

I'm on my second 2500 with the 6.4. My first one gave me zero issues and I traded it when I went over 100k. My 2023 has 29k miles, no issues.
